A Note from Mike

Hello Bishop Kelly Families and Friends,

Well this is it, a final note from Mr. Caldwell after nine adventurous, fulfilling years of serving as your child’s principal at Bishop Kelly High School.

When I began this journey in 2014, after having already served as a teacher, coach, and vice principal in an earlier stint at BK (from 2000-2008), I wasn’t sure I was ready or cut out for the lofty job of Principal at Bishop Kelly High School, but I was eager, willing to jump in with both feet, and tried to remain humble in regularly learning how to do the job better.  I quickly realized that it wasn’t my six years of teaching math, my four years as a vice principal, and certainly not my Masters Degree in Education Leadership that prepared me for the job. Truth be told, it was my four years during college of waiting tables at Crane Creek Country Club that most prepared me for my last nine years as a high school principal.

As a waiter, especially on a very busy night, you have to be on your game and manage so many things all at once. You have a table of four that just sat down, are eager for drinks, and don’t care if you have a tray of dinner plates in your hand. You have a nice couple in the corner celebrating their anniversary that is ready for their appetizers. There’s a family of six, with young, hangry children, waiting for their dinner to arrive. Then there is an uptight gentleman that had his ribeye overcooked and needs you to hear all about it. My job as their waiter was to know who they were, where they were, what they needed at any given moment, and to ultimately try to give them all a great dining experience. Even if I wasn’t the one cooking their steak, It was my responsibility to make sure they had a nice dining experience. I loved the energy, the challenge, and the rewards of being a good waiter at Crane Creek. I enjoyed serving and I enjoyed (mostly) the interactions with the people. Although it was hard to take the significant pay cut from waiting tables to go into my first teaching job, serving food wasn’t my ultimate calling in life.

As I reflect back on the last decade of my professional life, I can’t help but feel fulfilled and grateful for the opportunity I was given to serve the students, staff, and community of Bishop Kelly High School. I will never claim to have done it perfectly, and like dropping a tray of flute glasses full of champagne in the middle of a full table, I know I’ve made more than my share of mistakes along the way. While I may likely only be remembered as the crazy bell schedule guy, I hope that all of you know how much I cared about the people I served along the way.

To do this work and not sincerely care about those you are serving seems to me an impossible and painful task. Our faculty and staff at Bishop Kelly are second to none. They care deeply about the students and are committed to their craft of teaching. As I soon depart and begin to look back, I will leave inspired and in awe of their passion, commitment, and dedication to their vocation. To have the opportunity to work with our faculty, and for the students at Bishop Kelly has been a true pleasure. While we didn’t always see eye to eye, I’ve always felt a mutual respect with a common commitment to be our best in all that we do. I can also say that the parents and families I’ve gotten to know and interact with over the years have felt like true partners in this process. While not always the case, I felt more often than not that we were all fighting for the same goals and pursuing what was best for the students.

In closing, thank you for allowing me to serve as your Principal these past 9 years. I will forever cherish my experiences, which include many ups and plenty of the downs, but most of all, I will cherish the thousands of relationships I’ve built over the years. Be sure to tip your waiters and waitresses and continue to Do Good in all that you do. Thank you BK, Go Knights!

Always Learning,

Mike

The 212 members of the Bishop Kelly Class of 2023 graduated in style! It was a beautiful Knight, with wonderful remarks by Bishop Peter Christensen, BK Chaplain Father Greg Vance, BK President Bill Avey, BK Principal Mike Caldwell, Valedictorian Cody Bockenstette, Salutatorian Daniel Ni, BK Faculty Member Jared Vreeland, BK ASB President Maggie Avey, and BK ASB Senior Class Rep Max Ciovacco. Additionally some very talented Seniors shared their gifts with us during the commencement ceremony. Sophia Puype (vocals) and Daniele Macdonald (ASL Interpretation) led a powerful National Anthem, and Henry Gale, Justine Lam, Molly O'Sullivan, and Sophia Puype closed the evening with a beautiful ensemble performance of our Alma Mater.

We are so proud of this Class of 2023, and all that they have contributed to the Bishop Kelly Community in their four years here. This class had their high school experience disrupted by the pandemic, but didn't let it send them off track. This listing of some of our BK Class of 2023 Points of Pride highlights some of their notable accomplishments. And in addition, this class brought faith, laughter, kindness, creativity, innovation, friendship, school spirit, and so much more into our halls each day. We will miss these grads, and hope that they will stay connected to each other and BK as Alumknights.

Putting on graduation requires a lot of love and labor from an army of people. THANK YOU to all of the faculty, staff, students, and volunteers who contributed to the beautiful ceremony this year. Especially the BK Maintenance and Grounds team, the BK Band and Orchestra, and Dr. Sarah Quilici who coordinated the entire event - and did a remarkable job getting everyone's name right!

See below for information about picking up your diploma Class of 2023. And if you would like to see more photos of the evening, click the button below.

Bishop Kelly Earns School of Excellence Award for the 6th year in a row!

Each year the Idaho High School Activities Association awards the top 3 schools in each classification with the “School of Excellence award”. This program is the most prestigious award a school can receive as it combines all aspects of IHSAA core mission for education-based participation. It combines how each school scored in state athletics/activities, state academics, and in the area of citizenship/sportsmanship, all weighted equally. Bishop Kelly is honored to have won for the 2022 - 2023 school year.

This is truly a team effort with every person in our school making valuable contributions. We would like to recognize and congratulate each and every one of our amazing and gifted teachers, leadership team, coaches, parents, and every BK Actvities program. Thank you for all your great work in the lives of Bishop Kelly students!

In addition to the primary awards, schools that score 90% on the Citizenship Component and have no player/coach ejections throughout the year or incidents of unsportsmanlike school behavior at state tournaments receive an "Award of Excellence" certificate.  Bishop Kelly is one of those schools. We are exceptionally proud of this honor.

A special & sincere thanks go out to all our coaches and student athletes for all your tremendous leadership, dedication, and hard work. You are to be commended from the highest level, and should feel very proud of all the great work you have done.

New Head Coaches for Softball and Boys Golf

Softball

After much thought and reflection, Coach Missy Nichols has decided to step down as head coach of the Bishop Kelly Knights Softball Team. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Missy for all her leadership, dedication, tremendous hard work, and direction of our softball program over the past 7 years. We are saddened to lose such an impactful coach, but wish Missy the best of luck in her new role as a Vice Principal at Bishop Kelly.

It is with tremendous excitement, we announce the hiring of Travis Ribordy as our new Head Softball Coach. It was clear through the interview process that Travis understands how to work with student athletes, how to develop a program, and most importantly understands the mission of our school.

As a passionate and experienced coach that has been part of our program for the past 9 years, and with 25 years of coaching experience overall, Ribordy says “I am thrilled at the opportunity to continue fostering the strong tradition of excellence with this program and build upon the tremendous success we have had in the past.  I am excited to continue fostering the strong tradition of the program and build upon the sense of one team between the JV and Varsity teams. My strength lies in my ability to look at the big picture and prioritize team development and I take pride in my ability to develop players, game strategy, and team leadership.”

Coach Ribordy will be present at our Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Softball Guest Services Facility on Monday, June 5th, from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Varsity Softball Field. Please stop by to welcome and and meet our new head coach!

Boys Golf

Bishop Kelly High School is pleased to announce Taylor Judy as our new Boys Head Golf Coach. Coach Judy's experience, passion, education, and coaching background made him a great candidate for the position.

Taylor is a Bishop Kelly graduate, played on the Boys Varsity Golf Team all four years, and won a state individual championship his junior year. After high school,  he went on to graduate from Northwest Nazarene University, where he played on the Men's Golf Team. His wife of almost 5 years is Kaitie who he met while at NNU and they have a miniature Australian Shepherd named Maverick that keeps them busy.

Taylor says he is "blessed and honored to be the new Boys Head Golf Coach and looks forward to success from our players both on and off the golf course."

A big Thank You to Todd Loveland who did a great job building our boys team before moving on to Head Women's Coach at Idaho State University.
