Medtronic Supports BHGH at Annual Meeting!

The Medtronic GI Group held their annual meeting in Phoenix, bringing together colleagues and leaders from across the organization. Philanthropy is a key initiative of each annual meeting, with Medtronic choosing a local non-profit to support financially over the course of the meeting. Each attendee was asked to make a donation to BHGH with Medtronic matching that total. A big thank you to Preston Collins for reaching out to partner with BHGH AZ.

BHGH alumna, Natalia, who graduated in May with a degree in Biomedical Engineering from ASU, attended the check presentation and was able to connect with various leaders for career advice. AND she met the GI Group President, Giovanni Di Napoli, who personally asked for her resume. Way to go Natalia!!

Boys Hope Girls Hope Summer Programming & Celebration!

  • Scholars attended summer school during the mornings and came back to our Learning Center for fun and interactive activities.
  • Scholars toured Willie Itule Produce, Inc. and learned about how fruits and vegetables grow and ripen before being delivered to local restaurants and grocery stores.
  • Scholars took part in a Bloom 365 seminar that educates young people on healthy vs. unhealthy relationships and build their skills to avoid controlling, abusive and violent behaviors now and later in life.
  • Scholars visited the ASU Engineering Department to learn about the many careers available with an engineering degree.
  • Rising high school seniors travelled to St. Olaf College in Minnesota for Envision U with other scholars from across the network. Envision U brought together BHGH high school seniors to prepare for their very busy senior year, attend a college fair, camping and comradery.
  • AND MORE!

And finally, scholars enjoyed a day of food (taco truck YUMMY!), fun, waterslide and games!

BOYS HOPE GIRLS HOPE DORRANCE SCHOLARSHIP COLLEGIANS

The Dorrance Scholarship is a highly competitive, need-based award that aims to instill college-going traditions in future generations of Arizona families, by providing financial access and academic support for recipients to enhance college persistence through unique enrichment experiences.

  • The program includes a $12,000 scholarship per academic year for four years. The total program is valued at over $100,000.
  • Recipients attend an Orientation and a Summer Bridge experience to prepare for college academics. A dedicated advisor meets with students regularly and tutoring is available when needed.
  • International travel, an innovation experience, and cultural enrichment events are designed to help round out the college experience.

We are so proud of rising collegian juniors and Dorrance Scholars, Lady and Becky, who spent six weeks on the ASU campus deeply researching an issue and creating a proposal for a project which addresses it. Their proposals cover background, budget, a timeline, and discussions with committed stakeholders. This year, the project's theme was happiness.

  • Becky's (pictured on the right below) group proposed increasing green spaces in south Phoenix's neglected parks.
  • Lady's (pictured on the left below) group proposed creating a game app which would get kids out in nature while teaching them about ancient civilizations. Lady's group took 1st Place!
