Doing Research with Data and Biospecimens under the Common Rule (OHRP)
|
Repositories are common practice in medical practices and in hospitals and research centers. Physicians create repositories to monitor trends in their patients. Hospitals may create a repository to monitor quality improvement efforts. Researchers also create repositories in order to track patient information and to allow that information to be utilized in broad, generalized research studies.
Keep in mind that repositories created for research, that is, intended for use outside of a single practice or hospital, and for others to access the data for research must be reviewed and approved by an IRB. Research repositories must be reviewed at an expedited level (usually).
Take a look at the following videos (or check out the slide decks provided) from the federal Office of Human Research Protections, which can be quite helpful in understanding the difference. As always, you can contact the Baystate IRB if you have any questions about research repositories.

HHS Finalizes Rule Strengthening Protections Against Disability Discrimination
|
Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through its Office for Civil Rights (OCR), finalized a rule that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. This rule, titled Discrimination on the Basis of Disability in Health and Human Service Programs or Activities, advances equity and bolsters protections for people with disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504). This important Final Rule is HHS’s latest action in furtherance of Executive Order 14091, entitled Further Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.

Scientists Possess Inflated Views of Their Own Ethics
|
Key Points
- Recent research calls into question researchers' biased perceptions of their own ethical practices.
- This, though, should be unsurprising, given that researchers are subject to the same biases as everyone else.
- Ample evidence exists to point toward bounded ethicality and motivated reasoning as culprits.
