Newsletter | August 2022

Dear Friends of Boys & Girls Clubs,

Summer is always such an energetic and exciting time of year here at Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley. From 7am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, dozens of local kids join us every day for high-quality and very fun summer camps.  Summer Scientist, Art Explorers, Fashion Design, Lego Engineering, and Rock Climbing are just a handful of the camps we offer at BGCSV. At the same time, we support the school district's Summer Reading and Writing Academy program with complimentary programming between the time the program ends and when parents are able to pick up their children. All in all, hundreds of kids rely on Boys & Girls Clubs each summer to provide a safe and enriching place to spend their summer and we love having them here.

Now in the second week of the school year, we’re back on school campuses and operating seven locations across Sonoma Valley. Finding high-quality staff members to support our kids remains one of our greatest challenges at the moment. Unfortunately, a lack of staff has forced us, at least for the time being, to close our Sonoma Charter School site. We desperately want to re-open that site but will only do so when we know we can serve those members with a safe number of employees.  We would appreciate your help in spreading the word that we are looking to hire people who are committed to making a difference in our community and in the lives of the children we serve.

In just a few short days we’ll be teeing off at our 7th annual Fairways Fore Futures Golf tournament, and besides the great company and good food, we’re really looking forward to finding out who’s going to take the big prize at our raffle! The tournament is sold out, but anyone can participate in our raffle. Many great prizes are available, but the top prize is a three-night stay at the very cool and very beautiful AutoCamp Russian River property. See below for more details, including how to purchase tickets.

Thank you for your continued support of BGCSV.

We Need Your Support

In the summer of 2021, our wonderful partners at the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation approached us with the idea to develop a teen internship program where Sonoma Valley teens would work alongside Boys & Girls Clubs staff and provide a wonderful opportunity for local teens as well as additional support for our youngest members.

The program has been tremendously successful and we now have 20 teens enrolled in our Youth Development Internship Program.

As successful and inspiring as our Youth Development Internship program has been, it is one of our programs that is still in need of funding to ensure we can continue it throughout the school year. Please consider a gift today to ensure this win-win program is available for a long time to come!

Staff & Board Members - August Highlights

Welcome Esmeralda Sanchez Moseley as our newest Board member

Esmeralda Sanchez Moseley has twenty-three years of experience working in the field of education and currently serves as the Director of Educational Services for Petaluma City Schools. Esmeralda served as the principal of Flowery Elementary in the Sonoma Valley Unified School District from 2009 to 2021. She resides in Boyes Hot Springs with her husband Steven and their two children Maya and Mateo.

Esmeralda also served as an elementary vice-principal, literacy specialist, professional development instructor, and elementary classroom teacher. She has been successful in working with stakeholders across districts to support professional development, innovation, and collaboration. Her experience includes a focus on multilingual learners and creating culturally-sustaining environments that prepare students for a global society.

Esmeralda is passionate about supporting all youth in Sonoma Valley. She spent twelve years building strong relationships with parents, students, and staff as a school administrator and has an understanding of the daily lived experiences of the youth in our valley. Esmeralda is a strong supporter of the Boys and Girls Club’s mission to support youth to discover their highest potential. Her children currently attend the Flowery ASES program and participate in sports and summer camps every year. She looks forward to the opportunity to continue serving the youth of Sonoma Valley through the Boys and Girls Club.

Athletics Update

It's sports season and we need COACHES!

Our athletics program is underway and our kids at Boys & Girls Club Sonoma Valley rely on volunteers to coach their teams. We'd love it if you would consider coaching any one of our many sports to help offer our kids the opportunity to learn and grow as athletes!

Ideally, we love to have our coaches lined up prior to the season starting, and if you decide to coach a team and your child plays as well, you will receive a $25 discount on your registration.

Here are the following sports we plan on offering this year and the projected seasons:

Boys Basketball 4th - 8th grade (August - November)

(We are still actively looking for coaches for our Boy's Basketball program!)

Futsal / Co-ed / 3rd– 8th grade (November - March)

Jr. Basketball / Co-ed / K-2 grade (November - February)

Volleyball / Co-ed / 3rd - 8th grade (February - June)

T-ball / Co-ed / 3 ½ - 5 ½ years of age (April - June)

If you or someone you know is interested in coaching, please reach out to us at athletics@bgcsonoma.org

Thank you for all your continued support!

After School

School's in session and at Boys & Girls Clubs Sonoma Valley, and two of the primary programs we are offering at all of our sites right now are SMART Moves and Healthy Habits.

SMART Moves uses a team approach that involves Club staff, peer leaders, parents, and community representatives. Young people ages 6 to 15 engage in discussion and role-playing, practicing resilience and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills, and analyzing media and peer influence. The ultimate goal is to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior.

Healthy Habits is part of Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body, and Soul and is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s proven health and wellness program. Healthy Habits focuses on three core areas:

Healthy Habits (Mind): Addresses the ways an individual’s health behaviors are influenced by personal beliefs and exposure to positive modeling. In addition to nutrition education, activities focus on helping youth assess, practice, identify, consider, and recognize health behaviors and messages.

Daily Challenges (Body): Intentional focus on physical literacy: Ability - Increasing capability in basic movement skills and overall fitness; Confidence -the knowledge of the ability to play sports or enjoy other physical activities and Motivation- the intrinsic enthusiasm for physical activity for members to be physically active for life.

Soul Social Recreation (Soul): Emphasis on social and emotional development, or the social, cognitive, and behavioral skills that youth need to be healthy and productive. There is an explicit focus on emotional regulation, healthy relationships (with self and others), and responsible decision-making.

To learn more about this, or any of our other programs, please contact Joe Hardeman at jhardeman@bgcsonona.org.
