2022 Summer Camp Highlights

Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich campers, ages 6-15, saw a welcome return to traditional camp programming after two years altered by COVID-19. Everyone enjoyed the outdoor and indoor activities traditionally offered at camp. Clubhouse Camp, Camp Simmons and Teen Camp sold out this year, and smiles were a testament to the all the fun!

Olympic Special Event

U.S. Gymnastics Team Olympic Gold Medalist, Laurie Hernandez, spent a morning at Camp Simmons! Laurie talked to campers about setting goals and gave away signed copies of her book, She’s Got This! The retired gymnast is the official spokesperson for KPMG’s Family For Literacy program.

Congressional Visit

How many levels of government are there in the U.S.? In a republic, the leaders are elected to represent who? These are some of the questions our Clubhouse campers competed to answer with Representative Jim Himes during an energetic game of Are You Smarter Than Your Congressman?”

ESPN Celebrity Chef

Campers received a surprise visit from ESPN host, Molly Querim. She spent the afternoon working as the “Celebrity Chef” and then contributed her artistic hand in adding to the camp’s collective mural. Molly is also a frequent volunteer with the Club’s SMART Girls leadership program.

Highlighting our Programs

BGCG’s programs have a proven impact on the academic achievement of Greenwich’s youth. BGCG balances academic support with a variety of engaging, fun, and structured academic activities. BGCG also empowers youth to make healthy choices for immediate and long-term benefits of mental health, competitive sports, and recreational sports.

Here’s a look at a few of our popular programs.

STEM - Technology

Our Robotics program for Grades 4 & 5 covers introductory robotics and engineering principles using Lego robotics sets. We cover everything from basic assembly, to the robot design process, to building and coding the robot to carry out the desired functions. For youth in Grades 1 and higher, our Game Design, Intro to Programming, and Kids Coding classes introduce members to creating microgames, 2D design, 3D design, and SCRATCH.

Aquatics

In addition to regular Free Swim sessions, all BGCG members have the opportunity to have a 30-minute weekly swim lesson. Lessons vary from “learn to swim” to “stroke technique.” Participants are given instruction on butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle, with more advanced swimmers learning competitive dive and turn techniques.

Alumni Reunion

Making New Memories

“Once a Club kid, always a Club kid” is more than a catchy slogan for Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich. For many, the bond Club members make during their youth remains for life. On June 18, a group of Club Alumni ranging from the 1950s through last year gathered to to reunite, eat, and reminisce. Club Alumni also toured the Clubhouse, which many had not seen since their teens, and talked fondly about their summer days at Camp Simmons.
