Florida's Funky Fest's

July is a time for celebration! America the beautiful's birthday is coming up and the whole country is ready to party! For Florida it is our duty as the weird uncle of the U.S. to showcase our patriotic pride by hosting some of the strangest shindigs. Here are a few of our favorite funky festivities:

HEMINGWAY DAYS

JULY 16-21

Key West honors and celebrates esteemed author and former resident Ernest Hemingway, with Hemingway days. Festivities include a look-a like contest at Sloppy Joes bar (one of Hemingway's regular haunts), a running of the bulls event, fishing, paddle boarding and a short story competition organized by his granddaughter Lorian Hemingway.

UNDERWATER MUSIC FESTIVAL

JULY 13th 10AM-2PM

The 40th annual underwater music fest! Taking place at Looe Key Reef and broadcast on WWUS 104.1FM. This event promotes responsible diving and coral reef preservation. The playlist will be featuring aquatic themed music such as "The Little Mermaid" and "Octopus's Garden." There will be a free educational welcome gathering July 12th at the Mote Marine Lab's Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration.

WAUSAU POSSUM FESTIVAL

AUGUST 2-3

In Wausau, residents love their possums! So much so, they honor the mighty marsupial every year. A previous Weird Florida feature, this year will mark the 55th annual Wausau Possum Fest and will feature the crowning of a Possum King and Queen. There is also a Possum parade, games, live music, vendors and a possum auction.

What's Weird?

Too hot? Ditch the clothes!

Looking to beat the heat? Check out Cypress Cove Nudist Resort in Kissimmee Florida, a family-owned and operated resort since 1964. Cypress Cove is the premier nudist vacation spot for those who seek a wholesome au natural experience. The nearly 300-acre facility has a 50-acre lake, 130 acres of protected wetlands, and 20 acres of recreational fun. It has all the amenities of any other world class resort, but with unique names like Cheeks Pool Bar & Grill, Figleaf Boutique, Body Works gym, and Scuttlebutts Bar. However, the must-see place to visit at Cypress Cove is the American Nudist Research Library and the Nudist Hall of Fame. These two institutions were established to preserve the history of nudism and honor those who further the cause. So be cool and let it all hang out at Cypress Cove. Just don’t forget your sunscreen.

Cesar is everywhere, but he doesn’t want to miss an opportunity to teach inquisitive minds about the colorful characters in South Florida history.  They certainly are funny, daring, hardworking, inquisitive, and even elusive. Get to know some heroes and unsung heroes of South Florida's past as historian Cesar Becerra zooms in at times from land or at times from sea and regales all with the tales of people he actually knew and met and others who he has studied for years.

Crystal Passmore of Waynesville, NC

In preparation for the Bigfoot Conference, we happened upon a store in Waynesville, NC called Crystal Threads Monogramming. After explaining our mission, we found out Crystal was a true blue Bigfoot Queen and the founder of a former Bigfoot fan club for kids. Her memorabilia collection would astound any aficionado. Needless to say we found a perfect partner in crime, or we mean Bigfoot enthusiast. Crystal and her daughter became our Bigfoot merch fairy godmothers, whipping up our

T-shirts and hats to meet our deadlines with heroic smiles. Thank you Crystal for proving that sometimes finding exactly what you need is as easy as stumbling into a friendly neighborhood Bigfoot queen's paradise.
