• Upcoming solar eclipse and eye protection

On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean and will pass over Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

While Maryland will not fall under the direct path of the eclipse, the state will experience a partial solar eclipse beginning at approximately 2:05 p.m. and peaking around 3:20 p.m.

If you are interested in having students observe the partial solar eclipse, a limited number of eye protection glasses, called Eclipse Shades, can be found in the Grade 1 “X Marks the Spot” kits. After use, the Eclipse Shades must be returned to the “X Marks the Spot” kit as they are a crucial piece of equipment for the unit. Eclipse Shades are SAFE FOR DIRECT SOLAR VIEWING.
