Communications with DOD personnel gets harder at
year’s end.
FYI: You might see a delay in communications with DOD personnel the last two weeks of the year, mainly because of the holidays. We recommend scheduling talks with TPOCs and topic authors as early as possible to avoid critical delays. Remember, pre-release for SBIR/STTR 22.1/22.A is December 1, 2021 to January 12, 2022.

QUESTION OF THE DAY:
What color is the money at the DOD?
The “Colors of Money” is a term used in the DOD as shorthand for categories of budget appropriations and how the money will be used. DOD appropriations are broken into five colors or purposes — Research; Development; Testing & Evaluation (including SBIR/STTR); Procurement (SBIR/STTR Phase 3); and O&M (Operations and Maintenance), Military Personnel Expenses (MILPERS), and Military Construction (MILCON). To learn more about the Colors of Money and how BBCetc can help you navigate DOD SBIR, get in touch with us.

Department of Education
Institute of Education Sciences (ED/IES)
SBIR Overview
Our experts will review SBIR/STTR program goals and eligibility along with the nuances of the ED SBIR/STTR program, including funding rates, application components and proposal scoring.
You’ll learn how to:
• Communicate with your Program Manager
• Search past awards
• Develop your preliminary project plan and budget
• Avoid common pitfall
|
|
Remember, universities usually reduce activity from December 24 – January 2.
If you have an NIH grant submission with a January 5, 2022 deadline, schedule communication early enough with universities so you receive all of the information you need before the holidays. Companies should allow at minimum two full weeks to obtain a letter of commitment for the university subaward. Keep in mind that schedules for collaborators such as consultants should be set before the holiday as well.

WOMEN ENTREPRENEUR SERIES
“The screening methods for mental health in children haven’t been updated since the 1980s.”
Wendy Ward
Founder
futuresTHRIVE
futuresTHRIVE is currently in final conversations on Phase I funding with NSF. BBCetc was Wendy’s partner throughout the process. “Our BBCetc consultant readily provided all of his expertise — and it was knowledge we truly needed.
Without his expertise and BBCetc’s resources, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” said Ward. “We always felt as though we were his only client. I seriously can’t praise him and BBCetc enough.”

Replace your eRA Commons password with a passphrase starting in November
eRA account credential maintenance will continue (at least for now) but NIH is moving to passphrases — a set of random words or a sentence at least 15 characters long — effective sometime in November (date to be confirmed). Passphrases will only need to be updated annually.
