Winter is the time to keep your feeders full of quality seed and you want to be sure there is no filler in what you’re paying for. Here are two tips for smart seed buying:
1. Watch out for filler. Wheat is a cheap, commonly-used filler that our backyard songbirds don’t eat. If you’ve recently picked up a bag from a big box store, see if you can identify the wheat (I find it looks a bit like a pair of lips.)
2. Also, read the label. Does it say something like “may contain oil to suppress dust.” Birds don’t like oil or dust!
Is this all too complicated? Then just come to us and we’ll set you up with the right seed for the season with no filler. As we noted in last month’s newsletter, birds will keep coming back for more.
Bird feed is one product that we get every week. Each Tuesday, a new order arrives and our shelves get refilled. Looking a specific feeder? Let us know and we may be able to order it for you, often with a very quick turnaround.
