#1 Pennsylvania Dutch Fraktur

Dreisbach, J.S. Certificate of Birth and Baptism. Pennsylvania German Fraktur Folk Art. J.S. Dreisbach, Printer. Bath, PA: circa 1861-1862. Single sheet, roughly 13 by 15 ¾ inches, although framed by a matte which presumably covers some of the blank margins. In shrinkwrap with a cardboard backing. A birth and baptism certificate printed by John S. Dreisbach, announcing the birth of Peter Alwin Darrohn, son of Jesse and Sally Ann Darrohn, born January 21, 1862. Features a decorative border, with angels and birds, all rather crudely colored in. All text in English. An example of Pennsylvania German Fraktur folk art produced by John S. Dreisbach, a printer active in Kreiderville from 1846 to 1849 and then in Bath until 1861. It is possible Jacobus Heine did the color infill, as he often did so for Dreisbach, although there is no proof of this (see Earnest: Flying Leaves and One Sheets, p. 314 for previous information). VERY GOOD condition. Minor toning and a few small spots to the paper. $150.00

#2 Cabinet Card, Fashion

Gates, Photographer. Cabinet Card Photograph of A Man Wearing Earrings and Perhaps a slightly Frilly Collar with Thick Ribbons. E.R. Gates, publisher. Woodstock, VT: no date, presumed late 1800s. Thick cardstock paper. 4 by 2 ½ inches. Interesting cabinet card photo of whom we presume to be a man (moustache), wearing earrings and a collar more reminiscent of what women would wear in the late 1800s. The earrings could certainly signify the person was a sailor, and they appear rather ornate and prominent. Admittedly our fashion sense is not great (no one's mistaken us for a modern Beau Brummel), so the clothing could be men’s clothing. No matter what, they’re cool earrings! VERY GOOD condition. Minor toning. Heavy offsetting to the reverse. $55.00

#3 Wanted Poster, Black Liberation Army

Wanted by the FBI. Bank Robbery; Conspiracy to Commit Bank Robbery. Mutulu Shakur. FBI Wanted Poster. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Publisher. Washington: 1984. Single sheet, printed on both sides. Originally folded for mailing. 17 by 10 ¾ inches. A wanted poster for Mutulu Shakur, an activist involved with the Revolutionary Action Movement, the Black Liberation Army and the Republic of New Afrika. He took part in a 1981 robbery of a Brinks truck, in which one guard was killed, and in the ensuing getaway, two police officer were killed. He was apprehended in 1986 and convicted for his part of the robbery in 1988. GOOD condition. Fold crease present. General wrinkling and creasing, with minor tearing along the extremities. Minor toning. Mailing label on the reverse. $125.00

#4 Literary Magazines, Prison

Various authors. The Prison Monitor. May, 1915. Vol. 2, No. 4. Inmates of the Vermont State Prison, Publisher. Windsor, VT: 1915. Side stapled journal. 12 pp., including covers. US flag printed in color on the front, with a photo of Windsor, Vermont on the reverse. As stated on the cover, this is a "monthly journal devoted to the spirit of reform and to the onward and upward lift of the prison and prisoner. Edited and published in the interest of the inmates of the Vermont State Prison at Windsor Vermont." GOOD condition. Minor uneven toning and fading to the covers. Minor soiling, with a small area of spotting along the upper fore edge of the front cover. Some scuffing and fraying along the spine. Minor wrinkling. $175.00

#5 Black Liberation, African American

Garvey, Marcus. Hon. Marcus Garvey on his Return to the USA (side one); Explanation of the Objects of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (side two). 45 rpm. London House Records for the Vanguard Local UNIA-ACL. Newark, NJ: no date, 1960s. 45 rpm record in plain white sleeve. A recording of two speeches by Marcus Garvey, originally given in 1921, and issued on a 78 rpm record around the same time. These speeches outline his ideas on the United Negro Improvement Association, which he founded, and the pan-African movement, which he was a leading proponent of. Born in Jamaica, Garvey moved to the US in 1916, and toured the country lecturing on his ideas and the UNIA. Hoping to promote economic independence within the Black community, he worked to start several businesses, but was eventually charged and convicted of mail fraud. Often considered a Black nationalist, his views influenced many subsequent Black leaders. VERY GOOD condition. Record a bit dusty. Not play tested. $200.00

#6 Free School Movement

Various authors. New Schools Exchange Newsletter. Issue 125. May 1975. New Schools Exchange, Publisher. Pettigrew, AR: 1975. Illustrated wraps. 41 pp. Black and white illustrations throughout. Single issue of this newsletter produced to provide connections and exchanges of ideas and experiences of those involved in the Free School Movement that originated in the 1960s. The Free School Movement grew out of the 1960s counterculture and social justice movements, with the various schools themselves focusing on different subjects, ways of teaching, etc. As Scott Walter notes, “free schools tended to fall into the binaries of either utopian cultural withdrawal from external concerns, or built on the legacy of freedom schools with direct political address of social injustices.” He also points out that students generally fell into the white middle or upper middle class or poor children of color from urban communities. This issue discusses food in schools, the youth liberation movement, the Upland Hills Farm School and other subjects. GOOD+ condition. Minor general toning and soiling to the covers, with a hint of foxing. Minor wrinkling, creasing and edgewear. $55.00

#7 LGBTQ+, AAPI, Internet Technology

The Rice Paddy BBS. A computer bulletin board for Gay and Lesbian Asians and their friends. Promotional Flyer. Rice Paddy BBS, Publisher. No place or date, perhaps circa 1991. Single sheet, 8 ½ by 11 inches. Printed on both sides. A two sided piece, of very tangentially related material, with one side advertising an online community for gay and lesbian Asians through the use of a BBS, which acted as a server that allowed people to dial in via their modem. The flyer features a phone number, as well as instructions on what to set one’s modem to. The BBS platforms were originated in the late 1970s, and as the technology became more prominent, served as an important means of communication in the LGBTQ+ community. The forum allowed anonymous correspondence, as well as means of organizing in a quick manner. The reverse of this apparently reproduces a letter from a gentleman to another gentleman, thanking them for arranging open mic readings that helped to letter writer “establish a sense of the gay literary community.” GOOD condition. Two horizontal fold creases present. Minor toning along the folds. Light wrinkling. Small tear at the edge of one fold. $45.00

#8 Events for Women of Color

LAPIS. An Event Series for Women of Color. LAPIS Presents…Super Sundays!! Event Flyer. LAPIS, Publisher. No place or date. Presumed Los Angeles: 1990. Single sheet, 8 ½ by 11 inches. Printed on red paper stock. A flyer for a list of events in November and December of 1990, including a poetry reading, movie night, Pictionary challenge, and a unique tea party. No indication of the organization or their aims, other than they helped support women of color, and were partially funded by the State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs. GOOD+ condition. Some curling and minor creasing at the corners. $35.00

#9 AIDS Activism, Spiritualty

Meet: Ma Jaya Spiritual Teacher and AIDS Activist Event Flyer/Handbill. No publisher. West Hollywood: 1993. Single sheet, 8 ½ by 11 inches. Printed on light yellow paper stock. A flyer for an event featuring the spiritual leader Ma Jaya, being held at Plummer Park Auditorium on October 9, 1993. Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati was a spiritual leader teaching a practice rooted in Hindu philosophy and certain yoga practices. She established the Kashi Ashram in Florida in 1976 and was known for acceptance of all people. Her foundation helped sponsor AIDS education and prevention, among other causes. However, her ashram and work has been called a cult by some, with allegations of physical and emotional abuse against the ashram and her leadership. VERY GOOD+ condition. Luther, A.B. Plantation Rubio. Report of A.B. Luther. May 15, 1907. Tehuantepec Rubber Culture Co., Publisher. New York: 1907. Printed wraps. 7 pp., plus 9 black and white photo pages. A report on the US owned rubber plantation, Plantacion Rubio, in Mexico, by its manager A.B. Luther. He notes that not much is new to report, and only the maintenance of the plantings is what the main activity is. Of note are the black and white photos which document the fields, some of the workers and the buildings associated with the plantation. GOOD condition. Based on the presence of several shoe impressions on the front cover, this may have been stored on a floor of some sort. Or perhaps they are the demonstration of what rubber can do for the soles of shoes. Moderate soiling and toning to the covers. Minor wrinkling and creasing. Area of offsetting to the rear cover. $125.00
