A standing ovation for these men!

Speaking of the County Fair, it kicked off on Sunday, July 23, with the Salute to Veterans, Troops and Their Families, organized by former Commissioner Bob Proud. This year, World War II veterans were honored for their sacrifices and bravery during the war that changed the course of world history. We were so thrilled to have these gentlemen at the fair, all Clermont County veterans who proudly served in the Army, Air Force, Marines and Navy. Back row, from left, Joseph Fitzwater, Air Force; Jim Lefferson, 91, Navy, served at Okinawa and Iwo Jima; Clyde Conley, Navy; Harold G. Harry, Marines. Front row, from left, Jim Spiller, 90, Army; Charles Bailey, 95, Army (combat engineer); Roy Abrams, 90, Army; and Elmer Bowling, 93, Army, served in the South Pacific. Not pictured is John Neal, who served in the Marines and was also at Iwo Jima. Mr. Neal attended in his full dress uniform.
County sues  pharmaceutical distributors
The Clermont County Board of County Commissioners declared at their July 12 Session that opiate abuse, addiction, morbidity and mortality has created a serious public health and safety crisis in Clermont County, and is a public nuisance. The County is seeking damages from wholesale pharmaceutical distributors who oversee the distribution of controlled substances in this region, and are required to report suspicious orders of opiate-based drugs to federal and state authorities.

The Board of Commissioners, the Prosecuting Attorney, and the Court of Common Pleas are jointly retaining the law firm of Greene, Ketchum, Farrell, Bailey & Tweel of Huntington, West Virginia, as special counsel to pursue remedies against the distributors. Green, Ketchum filed suit on July 28 in Columbus.  Read more here. Read Columbus Dispatch story.

The CASC provides an alternative to jail for misdemeanants who are convicted of drug- or alcohol-related crimes. Women will begin to be admitted as of Sept. 1. Read more here.
