As our cities pass from sub-urbanization to an “urban renaissance”, urban manufacturing is playing a vital role in driving economic developments. A new kind of manufacturer is dotting the U.S. map as small, city-based manufacturers are producing high-value, design-oriented products. They demand skilled workers, and while each company may be small, together they are providing solid jobs and products.
As urban leaders re-use buildings for mixed-use and light industry, these models have potential for nation-wide replication and support for newer manufacturers. There remains the urgent need to support manufacturing and the jobs it brings to metropolitan areas where the majority of workers already live, and where the millennial work force wants to live.

In 2013, Integro Technologies built their corporate headquarters in Historic Downtown Salisbury, North Carolina. Integro has an additional four sales offices in Maryland, Indiana, South Carolina, Virginia, staffed with full-time, experienced machine vision application engineers. Integro has been the recipient of awards praising its business acumen and technical competence.

In 1932, C.E. Doolin learned a corn chips business was for sale, so he purchased the recipe and began making Fritos corn chips in his mother's kitchen, selling them from his Model T Ford. That same year, Herman W. Lay began his potato chip business. Not long after, Mr. Lay purchased Mr. Doolin's company and formed H.W. Lay & Company, becoming one of the largest snack food companies in the Southeast. In 1961, H.W. Lay & Company merged with the Frito Company, becoming Frito-Lay, Inc. During the 1960s extending into the early 1970s,

Duke Energy Foundation STEM Grants

The Duke Energy Foundation provides philanthropic support to address the needs of communities where its customers live and work, and is currently
empowering students, educators and the workforce of the future by investing $2.5 million in 67 education and training initiatives across North Carolina.
The Duke Energy Foundation 2018 grants will enhance educational programs focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), K-3 early childhood literacy and workforce development. The foundation's education focus spans kindergarten to career – particularly science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) – as well as early childhood literacy and workforce development. The foundation also supports environmental projects and community impact initiatives, including arts and culture.
