Welcome, August!
August is usually a quiet month. It’s the only month of the year that doesn’t have any holidays.
While it may be a little quiet this month, we have exciting worship services planned. Find out more about what’s going on from the Worship Team and the Music Director.
August is also known as “the Sunday of summer.” The month when we rest and get ready to start another season of activities in September.
And as we approach September, I hope you’ll be rested and ready to get engaged for our Congregational Training on Church Growth, led by our church growth consultant, Paul Nickerson. That event will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024, in the Fellowship Hall from 9 am to 1 pm. I hope you’ll be able to join us!
And if you’re interested in joining the Church Growth Team at Trinity, or want more information, speak to one of our Deacons. We’d be excited to have you!
As I prepare to take a few weeks off, I hope you’ll find time to rest up this month and get ready for a new season of activities as we prepare for take-off in September with our Congregational Training, Congregational Vote on the Settled Pastor, Applefest Weekend, September Hymn Sing, Outdoor Worship Service at the Park, and more!
Blessings,
Will

At Trinity’s last Annual Meeting, we proposed a nearly-balanced operating budget. (Expenses of $237,646 vs an income of $234,186.). I am happy to report that through the first six months of 2024, we are meeting that goal. Our year-to-date income is 103% of expected, mainly due to higher-than-expected rental income. Our Thrift Shop is also doing well. Our overall expenses for the first six months of 2024 were 90% of expected. Due to the mild winter, we saved money on oil bills and snow removal. For the first half of this year, our income is exceeding our expenses by about $3600.
Thank you for your financial support of Trinity and for your help to keep our church financially healthy.
Jean Leif, treasurer

Hello Trinity Church Community!
It’s been a hot Summer but I’m glad we have been able to keep cool for worship by meeting in the Fellowship Hall over the last few weeks. My apologies for having to change the plans for some of the expected music. It was a necessary adjustment since the Organ can’t change spaces. Haha. For the month of August, we plan to continue meeting downstairs and return to the Sanctuary the first Sunday of September. Since we are not using slideshows, most songs will be from the Chalice Hymnal or physical printouts for lyrics and melodies. For those worshiping with us online, please reach out to Rita in the church office (trinitynorthborough@gmail.com) if you would like to borrow a hymnal for these services.
Since August is sometimes the hottest month of the Summer, I’ve decided not to select a Song of the Month or Sung Benediction in order to shorten the total length of the service. Even with these omissions, everyone can still expect to enjoy 3-4 hymns from our Chalice Hymnal along with unique music selections for Prelude, Postlude, and Special Music
Here is a quick look at what music things are happening at Trinity in August:
- August 4th - Communion-themed music, as well as grand Special presented by Deanna Yoder
- August 11th - Music and Devotion focused on Creativity and Art, as well as colorful service music to inspire us.
-
August 18th - Some familiar hymns in a Deacon-Led service as well as a Congregational Sing-Along of “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong for the Special Music
- August 25th - Some modern and lesser-known hymns to support our Guest Speaker, David Fountain, and his message about leaving our comfort zones to increase God’s Love in the world.
The Worship Committee has given me permission to organize a social event for the members of our church community to enjoy together. For the first of what I hope to be many future gatherings, I am inviting anyone to join me for an Organ Concert at the new Groton Hill Music Center in Groton, MA, on September 28th at 3pm. This event is ticketed and acquiring a ticket is required for attendance. Please see the attached flier for more information on the program details and how to reserve a ticket. Payment for tickets is due to Rita in the office by September 1st. All are welcome! Reach out to me via email (trinitynorthboroughmusic@gmail.com) if financial assistance is needed.
Have you ever thought…“I haven’t heard that song in a while”...“This song on the radio is really speaking to me and I think others would like it too”...“So-and-so has a good voice. They should sing something with Scott”. Well now is the time to give those thoughts a voice. With all of the music ensembles still on Summer Break, I am still looking to organize a few solos/small groups for unique Presentations of Talents throughout August and into September to cover for the music ensembles. If you are interested & willing (or have a recommendation), I’d love to hear from you!
Taking a glance ahead, I want to tell you about some happenings for September that you may want to mark on your calendars so you don’t miss out. More information will go out in the September Tidings, but feel free to reach out if you want more information or have any questions about these items.
- September 1st - Adult Voice Choir practice resumes: Sundays from 11:30a-12:30p
- Worship Band and Hand Bell Choir will resume: day and times TBA
- September 8th - Faith Formations for children resumes: Every 2nd Sunday of Month
- Includes a “Music & Movement” time after the service with me!
- September 21st - Trinity Music Ministry represents at AppleFest Open Mic
- September 28th - Social Event - Organ Concert at Groton Hill Music Center
I’m sorry I seem to be long-winded in this month’s message, but hopefully that gives you some excitement about the things to come in the next Season. I love that I get to be a part of this church body, even as an employee. It is you, the people, that make the difference. We may be in “ordinary times”, but we do some “EXTRAordinary” things in the eyes of God.
Until We Meet Again,
Scott Arnold (he/him)
Music Director of
Trinity Church of Northborough

EXTERIOR RESTORATION & MAINTENANCE TASK FORCE | |
STEEPLE AND EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE UPDATE
The Exterior Restoration and Maintenance Task Force formed by the Finance and Property Committee has been meeting regularly to discuss steeple maintenance, bell restoration and other related matters. The Task Force has thus far taken the following steps, among others:
- recommended engaging a contractor to thoroughly clean the interior of the steeple of bird droppings and other accumulated dirt;
- explored ways to improve safe access to the steeple’s interior, possibly by means of an extension ladder;
- recommended engaging Structures North, a consulting engineer, to investigate and report on the internal and external condition of the steeple;
- considered alternatives for bell repair, with one option being to secure the bell in place in the belfry and provide a remote means for striking it;
- prepared a grant application to the TABCOM George Wright Fund to support the work; and
- began work on a Community Preservation Act grant application to the Town of Northborough’s Community Preservation Committee (CPC).
If you have any questions or suggestions for the Task Force, please contact one of its members: Pete Carlsen, Jean Leif, Tom Danforth, Wally Corwin, Cheryl Silverberg, Beth Buckley or Tim Cashmore.

The Search Team is happy to report that our nomination for Settled Pastor is Rev. Will Seals. We listened to your wishes for a settled pastor, and we feel Pastor Will is a perfect fit for Trinity. Will has been our interim for 22 months, and is excited to join us in a permanent position.
Please mark your calendar - we will hold a business meeting after worship service on Sept 15th to ratify the nomination.

Afghan Refugee Project
Trinity continues to support our Afghan refugee family, both financially and through our friendship. Rose and her son, Mark, live in Northboro. Rose is taking classes at Quinsigamond Community College this summer, with the help of a Trinity scholarship.
Her goal is to become a dental assistant and eventually a dental hygienist. Mark is enjoying day camp at the YMCA in Westboro. Both will be returning to school in the fall - Rose as an aide at Algonquin and Mark will be a 3rd grader at Peaslee School.
Our Outreach Team continues to subsidize their rent until the family can be financially self-sufficient. We are accepting donations for this project. You may donate online or send a check made out to Trinity with the words "Afghan Refugee Project" in the memo line.

One of our ongoing projects is helping those in our community that have food insecurity by donating every month to the local food pantry. Thank you, Faith, for organizing the congregation.
Our work partnering with Worcester Fellowship helps another segment of our greater community combat food insecurity.

Give to Trinity Church
“Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands—all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.” – Luke 6:38, Good News translation
Taking our cue from Jesus, looking to God as our Source and Supply for all our needs, let us give to Trinity Church with a cheerful and generous heart, knowing God’s storehouse is always overflowing with abundance – an abundance which can never be diminished or run dry.
Thank you for sharing your time, talent, and treasure with Trinity Church!
If you're paying by check, please make checks payable to Trinity Church. Our mailing address is 23 Main St, Northborough, MA 01532.
You can also use “bill pay” and have your bank mail a check to us on a regular schedule set up by you, at no cost. Or give online at www.trinitynorthborough.org/donate
