Ask the Family Educator

by Maia Lewis, Early Childhood Coordinator

How can I help my child have a successful first experience at preschool?

The transition to preschool is a very exciting and emotional time, for both parent and child. For many, it marks a change in the level of a young child’s dependence on their primary caregivers. Those first drop-offs of the school year can be filled with anxiety, but preparing your child to have a successful first week of preschool will get the year started off on a positive note.

So, how do I prepare my child for this change? Helping your future preschooler be prepared starts well before the first morning of school. Taking your child to ‘caregiver and me’ style classes (such as library programs) the summer before enrolling in preschool will help your child begin to understand the expectations of school. They may sit for a story, have a directed music activity, engage in some art experience, and have to clean up as a group, all with their caregivers in eyesight. These types of experiences give children some prior knowledge of what a school/class environment is like when they do go to a drop-off program. This will help children ease into classroom expectations when they no longer have their primary caregiver with them.

Familiarity will go a long way in easing those first day jitters. If possible, schedule a time for your child to meet their teacher and see their classroom space before the first day. Try taking some pictures of this experience and displaying them at home. You can often use these pictures to start conversations like “There is Abigail and Miss Trish! Do you think you two are going to paint together at school?” or “I see your classroom in this picture. What toys are you excited about playing with when school starts?” Make sure to use the names of your child’s teachers frequently at home. This will help your child know you trust the teachers, and that they are not strangers on the first day of school.

In next month’s newsletter I will continue answering this question by outlining some practical ways to ensure your preschooler’s very first day of school goes smoothly. I’ll discuss how to handle the first drop-off/separation and give some tips to help your little one be as independent as possible once their school day has started.

Home Electrification Appliance Rebate (HEAR)

Home Electrification Appliance Rebate (HEAR) funding through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) recently expanded the incentives that income eligible Long Islanders can currently receive through the EmPower+ program and local utility programs to make their homes more comfortable and energy efficient. This new federal funding means that low-income households could be eligible for up to $40,000* in FREE home weatherization projects and heat pump installations, and moderate-income households are eligible for approximately $25,000* through applicable programs for the same projects. Refer to the eligibility table to the right to understand the amount your household could be eligible for through state programs.

This funding is applied toward the cost of energy efficiency improvements, including air sealing, insulation, heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and electrical service and wiring upgrades. Qualified, participating contractors will help determine necessary improvements and what households are eligible for during the home energy assessment prior to starting any project.

Rebates and incentives are available while funding lasts so please sign up today! Go ahead and start your Empower+ application NOW or contact us at the Long Island Clean Energy Hub at LICleanEnergy@cornell.edu or

(516) 832-2591 ext. 125 for knowledgeable, personalized attention for any questions you might have!

NYSERDA

EmPower+ Application

Do you have a close friend or family member who owns their own home and is enrolled in federal SNAP (food) or HEAP (energy assistance) benefit programs? If so, those homeowners are now eligible for a SIGNIFICANT, FREE, NO COST, investment in their home heating and cooling environment.

Home Electrification Appliance Rebate (HEAR) funding through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) recently expanded the incentives that income-eligible New Yorkers can receive through EmPower+ program to make their homes more comfortable and energy efficient. This funding is in addition to the $10,000 incentive for low income HHs (60% of Area Median Income) and $5,000 for moderate income HHs (80% of Area Median Income).

The total HEAR incentive amount a household is eligible to receive is based on the combination of energy efficiency improvements. The maximum incentive limits per improvement are as follows:

Air sealing, insulation, and ventilation: $1,600

Electrical service upgrade (panel box): $4,000

Electrical wiring upgrade: $2,500

Heat pump water heaters: $1,750

Heat pumps: $8,000

Local EmPower+ contractors can help determine the necessary improvements and what households are eligible for during the home energy assessment and prior to starting the project.

Congressman Tom Suozzi teamed up with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program to introduce another million spat-on-shell oysters into Manhasset Bay!

We extend our sincere appreciation to Rep. Suozzi for securing the grant that funded this project. Since taking office in 2017, he has played a crucial role in increasing funding for Long Island Sound restoration efforts. We also want to thank Eric Swenson with the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee who received the restoration grant, Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte, Councilman David Adhami, the Manhasset Bay Protection Committee, and TONH Bay Constables for their invaluable support of this extraordinary initiative.

Meeting with Senator Alexis Weik

eVTR Modernization Project Launched with National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Grant

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County (CCE) Marine Program is excited to announce the launch of the Electronic Vessel Trip Reporting (eVTR) modernization project. This initiative, supported by a $300,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, aims to modernize data collection systems for Long Island's for-hire fishing fleets, including party boats and charter boats.

The eVTR project is designed to simplify the mandatory reporting process for fishermen, enhancing the quality, timeliness, and accessibility of fisheries data. This modernization effort is crucial for supporting the sustainability and competitiveness of Long Island's recreational fishing industry, which plays a vital role in the region's history, culture, and economy. In 2017, recreational fishing trips supported 5,739 full- or part-time jobs and contributed $473 million in sales, $209 million in income, and $363 million in gross domestic income to the New York State economy.

As the state transitions from paper-based to electronic reporting, the CCE Marine staff will provide technology, training, and technical support for the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program’s eTrips program. This will include outreach and training events to guide fishermen on using and adopting the new system. To further support this transition, CCE will distribute 150 iPads to participating fishermen, and CCE staff will offer ongoing technical support as needed.

In addition to supporting state-licensed party and charter permit holders, the CCE team will assist New York State food fish license holders who wish to voluntarily adopt electronic reporting.
