Back to School Sustainability Tips
It's almost back-to-school season, South Gate! The start of the school year is the perfect time to begin new recycling habits. With a few mindful actions, you can leave a positive impact and help make our city more sustainable. Here are some tips to get you started:
- Take inventory of your school supplies before heading out to buy new items. Once you make your shopping list, prioritize purchasing notebooks, binders, folders and backpacks made from recycled materials. By reusing and recycling supplies, you can significantly cut down on waste and save resources.
- Pack waste-free lunches with reusable containers, water bottles and utensils, and bring home any leftover food you may have. If you’re buying lunch in the cafeteria, take only what you can eat to avoid food waste. These small changes can reduce the amount of trash that ends up in our landfills.
- Get involved in your school's green programs and initiatives. Volunteering to help with recycling or composting programs, if they are available, is a great way to make an impact and inspire others to join in.
Let’s come together and make this school year the greenest one yet! Learn more about organics recycling and other ways you can make an impact at www.SortWasteSG.org.

Complete Streets Project
The City Council has awarded a $8.1 Million contract for the construction on the Tweedy Mile Complete Streets Project.
The project will renovate Tweedy Boulevard between Dearborn Avenue and Dorothy Avenue with an enhanced design that includes improvements for safety, traffic circulation, landscaping, and beautification. Improvements include road and sidewalk repairs, widened street corners, widened sidewalk at designated locations, landscaping, street furniture with a new design, enhancing pedestrian crosswalks of which four will be equipped with flashing lights, and bike amenities.
The City Council approved a 7-month construction schedule instead of 8½-months, to reduce the potential for safety issues and reduce potential impacts to businesses. Construction is planned to begin next month.
