CBO Estimate Shows House Ag Committee's Farm Bill Would Increase Federal Budget Deficit by $33B Over 10 Years

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) as expected late Friday, Aug. 2, released an official House farm bill cost estimate indicating that the House Agriculture Committee's farm bill would increase the federal budget deficit by $33 billion over the next decade. The CBO's report estimates that the farm bill will cost $1.25 trillion over the 2025-2033 period, with a net increase in the federal budget deficit by $33 billion. The primary driver of this increase is the cost of several commodity program provisions, which are expected to rise significantly due to higher reference prices in the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) program and other enhancements. Harris Decides on Tim Walz as Running Mate

Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate, elevating the former teacher and Army National Guard veteran to join the Democratic ticket and help lead the party’s fight to defeat Donald Trump. The selection – which Harris personally delivered to Walz via a video call, according to a source familiar with the matter – caps the Midwestern Democrat’s short but swift ascent from a relative unknown to a leading driver of the party’s attacks against the former president and the MAGA agenda. Vice Presidential Campaign Pulls Gov. Tim Walz Away from Minnesota

For the foreseeable future, Minnesota might be more of a layover than a home base for Gov. Tim Walz as he racks up the miles as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate. And that’s put some of his normal duties in the hands of others or required remote attention as he crisscrosses the country campaigning for and with Vice President Kamala Harris. The official schedule put out by his office has become repetitive of late: “Governor Tim Walz has no public events scheduled.” MORE

Pritzker Signs Measures Reining in Biometric Data Privacy Law, Eliminating Grocery Tax

Illinois’ first-in-the-nation law that allows residents to sue companies over the improper collection of their biometric information will be slightly less punitive after Gov. JB Pritzker signed a new law late last week. Lawmakers this spring amended the Biometric Information Privacy Act in response to an Illinois Supreme Court ruling last year that suggested lawmakers clarify the law. That ruling found fast food chain White Castle violated BIPA each time employees scanned their fingerprints in the course of performing their jobs, as the company never obtained employees’ permission to collect their fingerprints.
