Surveys and Focus Groups

Every three years, non-profit hospitals are mandated to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to identify the health needs of the community they serve. In 2025, a group of hospitals in southeastern Pennsylvania is collaborating on this assessment. Your opinion matters! They want to hear directly from local communities about what health issues are significant to them. By completing the survey, you will help shape the future of healthcare in our region!

As a token of their appreciation, participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of 80 $25 gift cards upon survey completion. To participate, you must be 18 years or older and reside in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia counties. The survey will be open until September 30, 2024. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and share it with the community you serve. Together, we can create a healthier community for all. Thank you for your participation and support in improving community health!

The Do's, Don'ts, & Changing Laws in PA

PANO

August 27, 10:00-11:30am

Webinar with Retired PA State Police Captain James A. Jones

If you’ve ever raised funds for your nonprofit, chances are you’ve had experience with small games of chance (SGOC) – raffles, fifty-fifty drawings, pull-tab games, and more. Some restrictions around SGOC that were lifted during the pandemic are back in effect. Plus, new bills have been introduced in the PA House and Senate that could impact organizations looking to support their missions with SGOC (in a good way!)

But even without new laws to consider, the existing laws governing small games of chance can be subject to interpretation, leaving unanswered questions about how we run them and, sometimes, if we should run them at all. Learn more and tune in to this webinar!

What GenZ and Millennials in Your Office Want

Philanthropy Today

“For some young people working in nonprofits, their organizations and leaders seem out of touch. Top officials, they believe, are too consumed by their legacy and the hunt for grants. They feel radical change is needed now — in how philanthropy dispenses money, how organizations fight crises, and how staff is managed — but they don’t yet have the power or resources to make it happen. They have big ideas, but they’re still being treated like kids.

This, in raw form, is a perspective shared by three young nonprofit leaders who spoke to The Commons, a Chronicle project exploring divides in the country — including a generational divide playing out in organizations across the country. As younger millennials and members of Gen Z, the three leaders have witnessed the effects of multiple crises — the Great Recession, climate change, a pandemic — from an early age. They are eager to do good, but they work in ways that are unfamiliar, even off-putting, to older generations. Read more.

Strong Support Across Partisan Lines for Policies That Boost Housing, Pew Charitable Trusts

A survey finds Republicans, Democrats, and independents all back measures that help promote more supply. “A national survey released in late 2023 shows robust support for a range of policies that states and cities are enacting to allow more housing to be built and bring down costs. These policies are broadly popular among suburban, rural, and urban residents, and among homeowners, renters, and all income groups." Read more.

How States Can Support Coordination Between 988 and 911 Systems

Effectively linking the national suicide and crisis line with call centers is a local function, but reports show states can play a key role.

“States can play a key role in helping local jurisdictions coordinate 911 call centers and the national 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, according to a recent report from RAND, a nonprofit research organization. In examining interoperability, or how localities ensure formal processes and protocols are in place to transfer calls between the two systems, researchers also detail how states have been involved in this vital work." Racial Equity at the Forefront: Priorities of Early Childhood Providers in Pennsylvania

Children First reports “Regarding quality, only 33% of Black children in Philadelphia and 40% of Hispanic children attend high-quality child care programs, compared to 42% of white children. The lack of quality denies them learning opportunities to set them up for success in life. But it’s hard to deliver high-quality programs when poverty-level wages deter qualified teachers from entering or staying in the field. PA child care professionals – mainly women – make on average $12.43/hour and Black and Hispanic early educators tend to be assigned the lowest paid positions. Even with the same higher education degrees, ECE professionals make 22% less than teachers in the K-8 systems."

Food, Housing, and Financial Resources

Mission First Housing Group, in partnership with Royersford Baptist Church, is excited to share that their proposed concept plan for Cypress Place at Royersford, a workforce housing development, will be presented to Upper Providence Planning Commission on August 21, 2024. The meeting is at 7:00 pm at the Upper Providence Township Administration Building, 1286 Black Rock Road, Upper Providence, PA.

All are welcome at this meeting!

Cypress Place at Royersford is proposed for land owned by Royersford Baptist Church at 452 S Lewis Rd. The vision of Cypress Place is to ensure people who work in the Royersford community can also live in that community. Cypress Place at Royersford will offer lower rents that working families can afford, enabling them to live closer to work and have more resources to meet other needs like food, clothing and transportation. This development is proposed in response to a need for housing that is less expensive that the average apartment in the area.

The project combines Mission First’s 35 years of affordable housing development expertise with Royersford Baptist Church’s 145-year history of commitment to and connection with the community; both organizations share a common vision of safe, equitable housing that will support residents and strengthen the community.

Learn more about Cypress Place at Royersford, follow the project’s progress, share their ideas about the plan and ask questions of the development team!

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program benefits Pennsylvanians 65 or older, widows or widowers 50 or older, and adults with disabilities 18 or older. For more information, visit the Department of Revenue's site here.

Lower Merion is currently gauging interest in a pilot community compost program. Participants in the program will collect their household’s food scraps and other organic waste, then drop it off in a nearby community bin at their convenience. The waste will be collected weekly and turned into compost! Learn more and sign-up.

In the recent Supreme Court decision of Grants Pass v. Johnson, Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the opinion that cities may use anti-camping ordinances against unhoused individuals without violating the Constitution. Essentially, this means that a community can criminalize sleeping in public, even when no alternative place for rest exists.

In Grants Pass, Oregon, and now across the country, violators face steep fines. For example, the initial fine in Grant Pass County is $295, which increases to $537.50 if left unpaid. Additionally, after receiving two citations, police can issue an order banning individuals from Grants Pass city property. Violating this order can result in criminal trespass charges, carrying penalties of up to 30 days in jail and a $1,250 fine.
