EDUCATORS OFFER PARENTS TIPS FOR HELPING KIDS UNPLUG, UNWIND, AND KEEP LEARNING THIS SUMMER

Route Bay City

YouTube videos, games, and social media can be an easy way to keep kids entertained during the summer, but local educators are sounding the alarm and saying time spent on screens can be detrimental to learning and development.

Luckily, those same educators have alternatives to offer kids and parents tired of the “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do,” mantras.

Rich VanTol and Scott Biskup, who both work at the Bay-Arenac ISD, have several easy, low-cost suggestions for parents looking to engage with their kids.

BEYOND SCREEN TIME: HELP YOUR KIDS BUILD HEALTHY MEDIA USE HABITS

Healthy Children.org

There are risks and benefits that come with media use. The key is to develop habits that help your family strike a healthy balance. You can decide what media use is best for your family. Remember, all children and teens need adequate sleep (8–12 hours, depending on age), physical activity (1 hour), and time away from media. (See the "Media Use Guidelines" chart, below, for general guidelines for media use based on age.)

Because children today are growing up in a time of highly personalized media use experiences, parents must develop personalized media use plans for their children. Media plans should take into account each child's age, health, personality and developmental stage.

CHILD CARE PROVIDER RESOURCES

Michigan Tri-Share

The MI Tri-Share Child Care Program (Tri-Share) is an innovative approach to increasing access to high quality, affordable child care for working families, with the cost of child care shared by an employer, the employee and the State of Michigan. The pilot also seeks to increase the labor market by allowing employers to offer a child care subsidy to help retain and attract talent.

This initiative, led by the Michigan Departments of Education and Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (MDE & LARA) is focusing on what entrepreneurs need most to open and expand child care businesses—help finding and renovating space, startup funding, help recruiting staff, and support creating a business plan.
