Your Recruiting Process Reflects Your Company's Image

by Bob Gershberg, CEO & Managing Partner, Wray Search

Bob Gershberg
We in the hospitality industry are driven to delight our guests. We roll out the red carpet for the chap buying his morning cup of coffee. We do somersaults to serve up a San Pellegrino, no ice with lemon to the classy lady at the bar. And heaven knows we will bring service to unparalleled levels when the jovial four top orders that second bottle of Cabernet. How is it then, we so often treat the six-figure executive who has shown great interest in joining our team so poorly?

Facilitating the recruiting process from phone screen to job offer is cumbersome at best. Accommodating the busy schedules of both candidate and hiring authority can test any admin's mettle. Add the burden of travel arrangements, flight delays and day-to-day snafus, along with the gathering of feedback from the various parties involved, it is no wonder the process can become overwhelming.

Promising 2nd Quarter Leads to Optimism for 2018

by Kevin Stockslager, Vice President, Wray Executive Search

Kevin Stockslager
Restaurant same store sales again grew 1.4% during the second quarter of 2018 compared to last year. Promising news indeed for the industry, as both the casual (0.6%) and quick serve segments (2.0%) outpaced last year's performance and showed promise for the remainder of 2018. The growth within the quick serve segment was the highest in over two years. Overall, this marked the third consecutive quarter of increased same store sales, great news for the industry after some negative quarters in late 2016 and early 2017. Of course, traffic numbers declined for the 13th straight quarter. However, the 1% decrease in traffic was an improvement from the 2.3% decline in quarter one.

Restaurant Risk Can be Foreseen

Some news and developments out of restaurants this summer have been dramatic.  Who would have guessed that all of the following would have occurred in last few months:

  • Papa John's brand meltdown: founder Schnatter removed after media reports of misconduct and difficult company culture. Schnatter launches a legal battle against the company in response.
  • Subway is just now testing new flavor and beverage enhancements via franchisor grants, ad fund and vendor allowances to franchisees. This comes after a period where Subway is said to have been dormant for years. Subway AUVs are down and store closings are up.
  • Starbucks (SBUX) loses its delivery agent in China. At the same time, China same store sales plunge from positive upper single digits to negative 2 as of the last quarter.
