This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to Schoolsafety.gov's Back-to-School Campaign, provides a final chance to register for the Effective Communication Principles class in Normal on Aug. 23rd, and promotes the upcoming classes on Threat Assessment, Digital Threat Assessment®, and Advanced Digital Threat Assessment®.

Schoolsafety.gov's Back-to-School Campaign

Schoolsafety.gov has launched a back-to-school campaign that "highlights resources and guidance that K-12 school leaders, educators, staff, and parents and caregivers can use to help prepare for a safe return to school. The campaign aims to empower K-12 communities to use SchoolSafety.gov tools and resources before, during, and beyond the back-to-school season to create and sustain safe and supportive learning environments for students and educators." Among the resources are actions to take, infographics, a reading list, social media posts, and a communications toolkit.

Effective Communication Principles Class on

Aug. 23rd in Normal

This is the last chance to register for the Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents class on August 23rd in Normal, IL.

This training provides attendees comprehensive education on the subject of communications. Throughout the training, attendees will learn about the importance of building relationships with the media and the community through routine communications. The training will also provide guidance on how to prepare for a crisis communications event and what to do should that day happen. Finally, instruction will wrap up with discussion on how to effectively communicate after a critical incident.

Threat Assessment Team Training in Freeport, IL August 29-30th

There's still time to register for the Threat Assessment Team Training class in Freeport, IL August 29-30th.

This comprehensive 2-day training on multidisciplinary, community-based threat assessment teams provides a history and background of threat assessment, targeted violence, threat assessment research, risk factors, and behavioral indicators of those who are intending to commit targeted violence against others. It also provides training on the concept and advantages of a community-based, multidisciplinary threat assessment system, team dynamics, threat assessment process, and management principles.

Sessions of Digital Threat Assessment® and Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® Now Scheduled

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce 3 upcoming sessions of the Digital Threat Assessment® class and 1 upcoming session of the Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® class being held via Zoom.

The Digital Threat Assessment® training will enable participants to establish a framework to better assess all threats by constructing and considering the digital baseline of a threat maker by locating, documenting, and evaluating social media data through a threat assessment lens. A significant portion of the day will be spent engaging in hands-on exercises on the most prevalent social media platforms and associated search applications. Building upon the Digital Threat Assessment® class by Safer Schools Together, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® advances participants' understanding of finding and curating relevant digital information consistent with real-life digital threat assessment data gathering scenarios. Significant engagement and hands-on practice will take place as participants are assembled into investigative teams and given a true-to-life mock scenario.
