4-H Adventure Camp Wraps up its First Year
Oh, what an adventure it was!
Saginaw 4-H is back from 4-H Adventure Camp
We greeted our first morning at camp with a sunrise polar bear plunge to start the day!! Followed by lots of swimming, kayaking, archery, arts and crafts, biking, bouldering, boat building, outdoor survival skills and more!
And of course, those crazy fun camp games.
A very special thank you to all the 4-H volunteers who gave their time, talents, and passion to help make this camp happen. We could not have done it with you! Also a very big shout out to the Saginaw 4-H Council who not only helped plan the camp but sponsored camp financially.
We hope you will join us on our camp adventure next year as a camper or volunteer or join the Saginaw 4-H Council and help us plan camp next year.
Our campers summed up camp by sharing….
“I got to try activities I have never tried before, and I got to meet new people and learned a new skill and had the opportunity to explore things I really care about” – 4-H Adventure Camper

Saginaw Bay 4-H Fish Camp Wraps up for 2024
Saginaw Bay 4-H Fish camp is a wrap for 2024 and we had a blast! Campers learned how to make their own fishing tackle, tie knots, cast, and practiced putting their own fishing rod together.
Campers took home a fully loaded tackle box, fishing rod and reel, and tote bag filled with fishing items.
Campers were fully immersed in fishing activities and spent time examining the health of the fishing habitat by collecting and identifying water bugs, learning about aquatic invasive species, Michigan fishing rules, and responsibilities of anglers to take care of the environment.
These future anglers also dissected a fish and of course spent time at the water fishing!
A special thank you to our community partners for helping provide this camp: Project F.I.S.H, Michigan Sea Grant, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Shiawassee Wildlife refuge, Clean Boats, Clean Waters, and the Future Angler Foundation.
We hope you will join us next year!

4-H CLUB & PROGRAM BEST PRACTICES
This section will feature a different topic each newsletter highlighting best practices for 4-H clubs and programs.
Points to look for in a good 4-H meeting
Effective 4-H club meetings are one of the ways you can have a significant impact on the members of your club. A successful 4-H club is one that meets regularly and has meetings that are both educational and fun.
The most effective 4-H meetings are those that have a balance between educational programs such as presentations and special activities (40 to 60 minutes), business meetings (15 to 20 minutes) and recreation or social time (15 to 20 minutes). Use the 4-H Club Meeting Wheel as a guide.
Not every meeting needs to contain all three parts or fit within the suggested time frame. Involving young people in planning and conducting meetings is an important part of both successful 4-H clubs and positive youth development.
Use the following checklist to evaluate your 4-H club meetings. Work toward being able to answer “yes” to all of the questions. The ones you answer with a “no” are the areas you will want to work on improving.
- Do all of the officers and leaders create meetings agendas and understand responsibilities beforehand?
- Does the president call the meeting to order on time, keep moving down the agenda and close the meeting on time?
- Do all members use correct parliamentary procedure when appropriate?
- Is the business part of the meeting short and concise?
- Are guests introduced and made to feel welcome?
- Is there an educational program in addition to the business meeting and recreation time?
- Are the meetings run by youth? Is the educational program of interest to everyone?
- Is there an opportunity for members to get to know each other?
- Are all announcements short and to the point?
- Do officers avoid doing all the talking?
- Do volunteer leaders avoid doing all the talking?
- Do all or most of the members have an opportunity to talk at least four times during the meeting?
- Is the recreation suitable for the meeting place and the group?
- Do members, officers and leaders treat each other in a courteous and respectful manner?
- Are volunteer leaders given a chance to voice their opinions?
- Are all members given a chance to voice their opinions without feeling judged or ridiculed?
- Is there fun, learning and fellowship at the meeting?
This 2023 version of "Points to Look for in a Good 4-H Meeting" is adapted from the document of the same name in the 2009 version of the Michigan 4-H Club Development Guide. Adapted from Points to Look for in a Good 4-H Meeting - 4-H (msu.edu)
