The 508 – The Oldest RAAM Qualifier
History – The Tradition John Marino created the first RAAM Qualifier the year after he started Race Across America. The event changed locations, names and owners over the years. But most ultra-racers remember the Furnace Creek 508, the iconic event that started in Santa Clarita, CA, passed through Death Valley National Park and ended in Twenty-nine Palms, CA. After a change in National Park Service policy, The 508 was moved to Reno, NV and re-named the Silver State 508. Today there are 45 RAAM Qualifiers in 20 countries.
Silver State 508 Over the years, dozens of RAAM finishers have raced The 508. That tradition continued after moving to Reno. The first female Silver State 508 winner was Solo RAAM winner Sarah Cooper. Others include Seana Hogan (6x Solo RAAM winner and Solo RAAM speed record holder) and Leah Goldstein (2x Solo RAAM winner and first woman to win Solo RAAM overall). Male Silver State 508 winners include Solo RAAM finishers Marko Baloh (7x), Rob Morlock (6x), David Haase (5x) and others.
Course Records Marko Baloh (SLO) holds the Silver State 508 Solo Men’s record, set in 2014, covering a 510-mile course in 26h:24m (19.3 mph) and Leah Goldstein (CAN) holds the Silver State 508 Solo women’s record, set in 2018, covering a 506-mile course in 32h:26m:35s (15.6 mph).
What’s Your Goal? There is no doubt qualifying for Solo RAAM and/or chasing course records are the primary objectives for many riders. But, we believe, the best way – certainly the most fun – is racing on a team.
2023 Silver State 508 This year will be the 41st edition of The 508. The race has hosted riders from dozens of countries and nearly every state in America. The 508 has a long history steeped in tradition. The 2023 Silver State 508 will start and finish at the Hilton Garden Inn, located in south Reno, Nevada. Riders pass through 3 photogenic western towns – Virginia City, Austin and Eureka, Nevada. The route is an out-and-back measuring 508.8 miles with 22,574’ of elevation gain. The roads are good, there is little traffic, and there are amenities along the route – cell phone service, hotels and gas stations. The event will be held September 22 and is open to solo riders as well as 2 and 4-person teams.
Mother Lode 200 New for 2023, the Mother Lode 200 is a challenging “double century” - 200 miles with 10,000 feet of elevation gain - which features the best of the spectacular basin and range country of Nevada.
Riders start and finish at the Hilton Garden Inn. The route follows the 508 route, climbing up 2,000-foot Geiger Grade to the historic mining town of Virginia City. While the 508 riders descend E down 6-mile canyon, the 200 riders descend S into the Eagle Valley past Carson City, across Jacks Valley, and through Carson Valley hard against the eastern flank of the Sierra in the shadow of Duane Bliss, Genoa, East and Monument Peaks to Topaz Lake. Riders then head E through Wilson Canyon to Yerrington and on to Silver Springs.
Here the 200 riders follow The 508 route W through Stagecoach, up 6-mile Canyon to Virginia City, where they are treated to a 2,000-foot descent back to the finish. The Mother Lode 200 is the perfect complement to the world famous Silver State 508. Two great races – 200 and 500-miles – set in the spectacular Basin and Range Country of Nevada.
Registration is closes September 1! The 508 starts in one month - September 22. Register now and help us celebrate the inaugural Mother Lode 200.

Natchez Trace 444 – 2023
The Natchez Trace 444 - often referred to as simply "The 444" - runs the length of the Natchez Trace Parkway, 444 miles from Nashville, TN to Natchez, MS. That’s 444 miles on one road, with no turns, no traffic lights, no stop signs, no driveways, no dogs, no Walmarts. The event is organized by George Thomas, member of both the RAAM and RAW Hall of Fame.
The Natchez Trace lies entirely within The Natchez Trace National Park. As such there are special rules which apply to this event. The 444 is not a “race” although it is timed - the event is considered a “personal challenge”. All solo riders finishing within 44 hours will qualify for Solo Race Across America.
Over the 444-mile length of the route, riders will drop from roughly 900 ft just outside Nashville to roughly 100 ft in Natchez on the Mississippi River. The first 100 miles – through Tennessee and Alabama – offers up steep rolling hills. The terrain flattens out as riders enter Mississippi. Along the way, riders will encounter great pavement, beautiful scenery and plenty of wildlife - armadillos, wild turkeys, white tail deer and, possibly, javelina. Event Director, George Thomas, considers the Natchez Trace Parkway one of the most beautiful roads in the USA.
This is generally considered an “easy” RAAM Qualifier. It’s not nearly as difficult as Race Across Oregon, Hoodoo 500 or Silver State 508. But, don’t be fooled, it’s plenty challenging. The last 55 miles take a toll as no one is expecting the continuous long rollers from a course that has an overall elevation drop. That said, this is a great event for someone looking to get into ultra-cycling. The event attracts RAAM veterans as well as first-time riders looking for their next big challenge.
The 444 is an extremely popular event. This year’s event is sold out, but if you are interested, ask to have your name placed on the wait list. And make sure to register early for the 2024 event. But register the day registration opens. The event usually sells out that morning!

Shivalik Signature (Hoshiarpur, India)
The Hoshiarpur-based event organizer, Bharat Alacrity, offers 2 RAAM Qualifying events – Romantika Uz Beas, held early in the year, and Shivalik Signature, held later in the year. This year will be the 5th edition of Shivalik Signature.
An increasing number of event organizers are offering participants the option of riding with or without a support crew. The Bharat Alacrity principals - Saran Preeti and Abhishek Kashyap - have taken a slightly different approach. Shivalik Signature will be split into 2 races - the first for “Supported” riders; and the second for “Unsupported” riders. They will be offered on separate weekends, roughly a month apart.
Shivalik Signature Edition V – Supported will be held September 17, 2023. Riders will start at Hotel Sea Rock, located in Una, Himachal Pradesh and finish at The Bike Store in Una. This will be the traditional RAAM Qualifier format - riders WILL have a follow vehicle with a support crew. The route will be 607km with 3,427mt of elevation gain. The route features rolling climbs of Mubarikpur to Hoshiarpur, the smooth highways of Punjab and patchless link roads joining Hoshiarpur, Kothi (Kamahi Devi Top), Dasuya, Pathankot, the Holy City Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ropar, Anandpur and Una.
Shivalik Signature Edition V – Unsupported will be held October 10, 2023. Riders will start and finish in Hoshiarpur, located in Punjab. In this race, riders will self-support. They WILL NOT have a follow vehicle with a support crew. Some refer to this as “bike packing”. The route details have not yet been finalized. They expect to publish the details on the website shortly.
Shivalik Signature is open to both solo racers and teams. Solo riders who complete either race will qualify for Solo RAAM.
Race Director, Saran Preeti, was a RAAM Official in 2017. She was a former lecturer in Physics, Punjab’s first female Super Randonneur, and the first female cyclist to ride the world’s highest motor road Manali to Leh.
