SFPS Board member and beloved leader

'She was a tireless advocate for children'
The SFPS Board of Education will remember and pay tribute to Member Lorraine Price at its September 2nd meeting. Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez announced the passing of Ms. Price on August 21st, saying
that she was a beloved friend and leader and extending our deepest condolences to her family and the many people in Santa Fe whose lives she touched.
“Lorraine Price contributed a lifetime of wisdom, leadership, advocacy for equity and humor to Santa Fe’s Public Schools. We can never repay all that she gave us,” said SFPS Board President, Kate Noble. “Last week, she was listening to loud music and thinking about how to keep people safe from COVID. We have work to do in her honor."
Ms. Price joined the SFPS Board of Education in March 2013, representing District 5 with great distinction after 20 years of service as a teacher and administrator in SFPS.
As we experienced the impact on Black lives from George Floyd’s death in 2020, Ms. Price joined a colleague in voicing her opinion in an editorial, saying, “Where do we go from here? We have got to deal with the fact that America has a justice system that does not work for everybody. We have got to come together to talk about what we are going to do, how we are going to do it and, as African Americans, we must decide how we will protect ourselves.”
Ms. Price said that she was on one side or the other of the desk in education since she was four years old. She moved to Santa Fe in 1985 and served as a teacher, assistant principal or principal at Gonzales Elementary School, Capshaw Middle School, Pinon Elementary School, Santa Fe High School and Capital High School.
She came to New Mexico in 1972, having earned a B.A. at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She earned a B.A. in Secondary Education and an M.A. in Educational Administration at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and worked in education at the University of New Mexico and Santa Fe Community College.
In 2019, the Board nominated Ms. Price, then vice president, for a New Mexico School Boards Association Excellence in Student Achievement Award as a shining light and role model for us all.

Tributes in memory of Board Member Lorraine Price reflected on her impact on children, learning and the community.

- Early in my teaching career, I had the opportunity to observe Ms. Price in the classroom at Capital High School. Her grit, passion, and steadfastness to help all students learn were both memorable and instructive; and characterized her long career of service to the children of Santa Fe.
- Lorraine Price was a great lady. When I started teaching at ATC (after “retiring” from teaching 12 years earlier), Lorraine was gracious enough to give me all the AP Lit teaching materials she had collected over the years. Her heart for students and educators alike knew no bounds.
- We owe you a debt of gratitude Lorraine Price. You graced us with your presence, your mind, and your heart. You asked hard questions, and you had the courage of your convictions. You made this world better by being you.
- I'm really sorry to hear this sad news! She was a champion for so many of our students.

COVID: What's new or updated |

PED releases COVID toolkit updates |
Under PED's "COVID-19 Response Toolkit for New Mexico's Public Schools," released on August 23rd, 100% of faculty and staff in districts and charter schools who have not provided evidence of COVID-19 vaccination and work onsite participate in COVID testing each week. The removes the previous requirement to test 25% of these staff weekly, ensuring prompt identification of cases.
Schools will provide student surveillance testing programs to all unvaccinated students on a voluntary basis.
Districts and charter schools are required to report the number of staff and students tested for COVID each week to the New Mexico Department of Health.
At-home rapid COVID tests should not be used for surveillance testing.
The PED recommends that those with a positive at-home rapid test confirm the result with a test performed by a healthcare provider. A negative PCR test (VAULT, Curative or Public Health Office test) within 48 hours of the positive at-home rapid COVID test would not require continued self-isolation or quarantine.

Según el "Kit de herramientas de respuesta COVID-19 para las escuelas públicas de Nuevo México" de PED, publicado el 23 de agosto, el 100% de los profesores y el personal de los distritos y las escuelas autónomas que no han proporcionado evidencia de la vacunación COVID-19 y el trabajo en el lugar participan en las pruebas COVID cada semana. .
