Exciting transformations are happening at the Tolerance Education Center!

Since March 2024, under the new management of the Jewish Federation of the Desert, we’ve made significant strides.

The Center has undergone comprehensive security upgrades, including new door locks, protective window film, and intercom and alarm systems, ensuring top-notch safety. We’ve also refreshed the space with vibrant new paint, a state-of-the-art museum wall hanging system, and enhancements to our auditorium and projection setup.

These updates promise to elevate every visitor’s experience and showcase our

commitment to excellence.

Pictures of Resistance

The photography of Faye Schulman

Few Holocaust survivors can tell their stories with photographs, especially ones they took themselves. Rarer still are photographs taken by the partisan fighters of their experiences.

Perhaps the only Jewish photographer known to capture Jewish partisan resistance on film is a former partisan, Faigel “Faye” Lazebnik Schulman, who served in a Russian partisan brigade for two and a half years in the forests along the Polish-Russian border.

Her photography is the subject of Pictures of Resistance, opening at the Tolerance Education Center on September 3rd and on vue utntil Deccember 3rd, 2024.

Open House Event and Book Reading

TEC's fall season opens with a new exhibition, a book reading, and an open house event on September 17th, 2024.

Thanks to our new association with the Jewish Federation of the Desert, this year's Jewish Book Council lineup of authours will be hosted at TEC.

We have an exceptional roster of authors confirmed to date, thanks to a third year of collaboration with the Jewish Book Council starting with Robin Judd, author of Between Two Worlds. Between Two Worlds: Jewish War Brides After the Holocaust.

Historian Robin Judd, whose grandmother survived the Holocaust and married an American soldier after liberation, introduces us to the Jewish women who lived through genocide and went on to wed American, Canadian, and British military personnel after the war. The stories Judd tells are at once heartbreaking and restorative, and she vividly captures how the exhilaration of the brides' early romances coexisted with survivor's guilt, grief, and apprehension at the challenges of starting a new life in a new land.

Join us from 3-5 pm in the TEC auditorium for an opportunity to hear from the author and ask questions.

The event continues with refreshments, the opportunity to view the new exhibit, meet TEC and Federation staff, and catch up with friends.

Reading takes place

Book Reading

Jason Bell is the second Jewish Book Council author who will read and speak about his book, Cracking the Nazi Code, the untold story of Canada's greatest spy.

In public life, Dr. Winthrop Bell of Halifax was a Harvard philosophy professor and wealthy businessman. But as MI6 secret agent A12, he evaded gunfire and shook off pursuers to break open the emerging Nazi conspiracy in 1919 Berlin. His reports, the first warning of the Nazi plot for WWII, went directly to the man known as C, the mysterious founder of MI6. Throughout this, a powerful fascist politician quietly worked to suppress Bell’s alerts. Nevertheless, agent A12’s intelligence sabotaged the Nazis in ways that are only now being revealed.

Reading takes place

from 3 to 5 PM at

the Tolerance Education Center

35147 Landy Lane, Rancho Mirage.

From Bre:

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I am thrilled to join the TEC as it begins a new chapter with the Jewish Federation of the Desert. Since its founding by Earl Grief in 2009, the TEC has been a testament to our community's commitment to tolerance, empathy, and respect. As I delve into the TEC's work, my excitement grows despite the rising challenges of antisemitism, bigotry, and populism. The TEC stands as a unique space for dialogue and learning, essential now more than ever.

With over twenty years in museum education and history, I've learned that history is not predetermined but shaped by our actions. My goal at the TEC is to create open-minded spaces where learners of all ages can explore and question both historical and current conditions.

I look forward to discussing how we can adapt and enhance the TEC's programs to meet our community's evolving needs.

Best,

Bricelyn "Bre" Koltun

Education Programming Director, TEC
