ROADS Program to Present Workforce Career Fair & Workshop on Sept. 13
Students will have multiple reasons to attend the Workforce Career Fair and Workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 13, on the Carson City campus between the Child Development Center and Joe Dini Library. They'll have the opportunity to practice their interview skills, build their resume and meet local business owners. If that's not enough, lunch will be provided.
Golf for Education in Support of Workforce Development on Sept. 29
One of the area's top golf events of the fall is nearing: WNC Foundation's Golf for Education. The 18-hole team scramble is set for Friday, Sept. 29, at Toiyabe Golf Club. The 24th annual tournament supports workforce development in the region and gives members of the community the opportunity to help students with financial need earn the certifications essential to acquiring meaningful employment and support Nevada's growing economy.

WNC Foundation and the Financial Aid Office are pleased to announce that students can apply for the William N. Pennington Career and Technical Education Scholarship for 2023-24. This generous scholarship enables CTE students to learn valuable skills to enter Nevada’s diverse workforce.
Activities, Free Lunches and Breakfasts and Giveaways for Students during Welcome Back Week on Sept. 11-14
While students have been adjusting to their class and study schedules for fall semester, there probably has been time for little else. That will all change on Sept. 11-14 during Welcome Back Week. Student Life is presenting activities including jewelry making, rock painting, DIY buttons, DIY plushies, DIY fuse beads, Mario Party, volleyball, and more. Student Life also has students' breakfasts and lunches covered on those four days. Check out the schedule!
WNC Celebrates 101 Students on Summer Session Dean's List
WNC is delighted to announce 101 students on the Dean's List for excelling academically during the 2023 Summer session. To earn this distinction during the college’s summer session, these outstanding students attained a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and completed six units of classes or more.

Foundation Fundraiser Captures Spirit of 1920s, Generosity of Community
WNC Foundation's sixth annual Reach for the Stars Gala fundraiser inspired attendees to exuberantly embrace the Roaring '20s theme. The Foundation’s chief fundraiser of the year raised a record $185,350 and netted $131,902 through the generosity of 321 attendees, event sponsors and donors.

President Dalpe and other panelists at the Northern Nevada Development Authority event on Aug. 30 discussed Nevada's current problems and how it can better prepare the workforce for the changing job trends and opportunities through training, career education and apprenticeships.
Three Employees, Facilities Staff Recognized at Welcome Back Kickoff
WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe led an inspiring kickoff to fall semester on Aug. 23, providing college updates, recognizing outstanding employees, celebrating college feats, welcoming new employees and outlining strategic planning for the 2023-24 academic year. Receiving the 2023 employee of the year awards were Desirae Blunt-Lamkey, Classified; Rachelle Bassen, Faculty; and Heather Rikalo, Administrative Faculty. Facilities received the President's Team Award.
WNC Grad Finishes Eighth
in World Diving Competition
It’s only been two summers since WNC graduate Krysta Palmer won an unexpected bronze medal at the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021. Now 31, Palmer is still a member of the USA Diving Team, combining with Jack Ryan of Denver to place eighth in the mixed synchronized 3-meter diving event in July at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
Greater Nevada Credit Union Honors Susan Trist as Community Hero
As Western Nevada College’s Disability Support Services director, Susan Trist has provided access to higher education to students with disabilities, for nearly two decades. In her role, Trist has positively impacted many students’ lives. Greater Nevada Credit Union has taken notice and selected her as a Community Hero for WNC. 
PBS Reno Spotlights Western's STEM Programs, Instructors and Resources
WNC was recently featured on PBS Reno's STEM Works program. The 10-minute video presentation included interviews with instructors Randy Naylor, Juan Ramirez, Rachelle Bassen, Matthew Anderson and Dr. Thomas Herring. They talked about the importance of upskilling, the college's resources and how they support student success.
Child Development Center Earns Sixth Straight Best of Carson City Award
For the sixth straight year the Child Development Center has been voted by community members as Carson City’s Best Child/Day Care Provider. Explaining why the CDC has remained on top as the best child/day care provider in Carson City comes down to the quality of its workers and their commitment.
WNC Graduate's Book Sculptures Spotlighted in Burning Man Festival
Western Nevada College graduate Debbie Lambin and her well-known book sculptures are part of an exhibit lighting up the playa.That’s right, Black Rock City Honoraria selected “The Octagon,” a creation of Debbie and her husband, David. It is among 75 artworks that are featured during the annual Burning Man Festival Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in the Black Rock Desert.

Travis Carr dedicated his professional career to helping K-12 students prepare for postsecondary education. Now as WNC's Workforce, Career and Technical Education (WCTE) director he has the opportunity to help people explore, identify and solidify their professional careers.
Western Embraces New Director of Institutional Research & Effectiveness
Dr. Christopher Michaels is the new director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness. His devotion to higher education includes bachelor's and doctorate degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno and a master's degree at Sierra Nevada College. He most recently was a professor of teacher education, earth, atmospheric and environmental sciences at UNR.
WNC Offers Ground School to Aspiring Aviators to Help with Pilot Shortage
Amidst the growing concerns over the worldwide pilot shortage, opportunities are emerging for aspiring aviators to capitalize on the industry's demand. Western Nevada College is stepping up to address this deficit by offering ground school courses that not only provide the foundation for a flying career but also allow students to earn college credit.
CDL Training Expands from Three
to Five Days Per Week
To provide the best possible educational opportunity to students, the Western Nevada College Commercial Driver’s License program has expanded classes from three days a week to five days per week. The classes run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Former WWE Star Shares Experiences
of Overcoming Life's Obstacles
Motivational speaker Zach Gowen revealed definitive moments in his life where he could have just given up and resigned himself to an unhappy and disconnected existence. But Gowen told an audience in WNC's Carson Nugget Hall on Aug. 8 that his mom motivated him to resume pursuing his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Gowen’s powerful presentation of “Don’t Quit Your Daydream” was arranged for WNC’s College Readiness Education for Students in Transition (CREST) program.
