~ August 2023 ~

Hello CVOA,

Message from the President . . . . .

Greetings CVOA members,

The soaking rains have stopped and a summer hot spell has taken over. I can’t say that these conditions generate an overwhelming enthusiasm to write about skiing, when my feet are always warm. But, thank goodness Sugarloaf keeps its eye on the ball. Our Carrabassett Valley playground is beginning to generate excitement for the West Mountain expansion by Sugarloaf posting updates on its Facebook page and on Instagram.

WSKI is providing periodic reports on the progress of the West Mountain project. https://wskitv.com/2023/07/17/wskis-exclusive-interviews-on-site-re-west-mtn-project/

There is an article about this expansion in Powder Magazine https://www.powder.com/trending-news/sugarloaf-west-mountain-expansion-update.

While you’re on the Powder Magazine site, there are some interesting articles about projects underway at other ski areas.

Quebec

March 18-March 22, 2024

Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus. CVOA will be rolling out the trip brochure in August for skiing in Quebec next winter. The dates are March 18-22, 2024 (Monday-Friday) with three days of skiing–one at Stoneham, another at Mont Ste. Anne and the third at Le Massif. The price will be the same as last winter-$885 per person, and we’ll stay in the same hotel–Le Hotel Manoir Victoria in downtown Quebec City. Essentially nothing has changed except, perhaps the Gondola at Mont Ste. Anne should be running. Like other CVOA trips, the official online brochure will have specific instructions on when to postmark a reservation form and send in the required deposit. The date will be September 18, 2023. In the meantime, if you have any questions, contact trip leader Thom Johnston at 207-852-3595 or tandpjohnston@gmail.com.

Future Events

🚴‍♂️ Coastal Bike Ride - Brunswick 🚴‍♀️

The June coastal bike ride with the Trueworthy's was canceled because of inclement weather and will be rescheduled in September with a date TBD.

Alaskan Cruise 2024

May 31-June 7

CVOA is headed to Alaska and interest is growing! We now have 20 CVOAers booked through Alaskan Dream Cruises  for the Last Frontier Adventure aboard the Chicagof leaving Juneau, Alaska on May 31, 2024 and arriving in Sitka, Alaska on June 7, 2024. This is a 76-passenger cruise ship, and it is now more than ¼ full with CVOA travellers!

There are sixteen cabins still available for anyone who wishes to join. A 15% deposit holds your reservation until final payment, 60 days before departure. There is a 10 % early booking discount (before Sept 30th) as well as a 10% group discount. Additionally, there is a 5% discount (and free alcohol!) for military personnel or 5% discount if you pay in full.

Travelers have begun making flight arrangements based on the days and times they wish to travel. Two one-way flights (Bos-Juneau and Sitka-Bos) begin at around $580/pp. This is not a packaged trip of CVOA, so cruise and travel/hotel arrangements are made by the individual members.

Full cruise details have been in the last few newsletters. If you wish additional information, visit their website at: https://www.alaskandreamcruises.com/cruises/2024-last-frontier-adventure/

or email Bonnie Farrar, trip “coordinator” at bfarrar7@aol.com. Reservations cannot be made online, but by calling Donna at 815-345-4113 and mentioning CVOA to get the discounts.

Range News

Hello Range and CVOA Members,

Weekly 5 Stand Shoots every Saturday 9am to noon, rain or shine. Trap Shoots every Sunday 9am to noon, weather permitting. I will post Trap cancelations due to weather on our Facebook page, CVOA Shooting Range, and our website, cvoarange.com. Come early to get a spot! The public and guests are welcome. These are a non-competitive shoots for fun and practice. If you are new to these sports, this is a perfect way to learn!

Our ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Range improvements continue. The photo above shows the addition of a wheelchair accessible shooting platform for the 100 Yard Rifle Range. A grab bar has been added to the Pistol Range. Thanks to Bill O'Brian for making both these improvements and thanks to Seth Gilbert for your input and ideas on valuable improvements.

The Women's Shooting Group is suspended due to lack of attendance. If anyone is interested in trying again in the Fall, let me know.

The new Electric Gate is functioning! The code is the same, just add # to the end of the code. Also, the gate stays open for 12 seconds. Please only enter one car at a time. If the gate comes down, it will not stop for your car and damage will occur. An underground sensor will open the gate when you leave. Please approach the gate slowly.

Range Member Lou Alfieri is running Wednesday 5 Stand Shoots at 4pm. The 4pm shoot has been well attended to date. Remember, this shoot runs in rain or shine since the shooting venue is covered. Come and have a blast!

As always, your help and participation is greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.
