Keeping Up on Summer in Oregon | |
|
We know many summer programs were deeply impacted by a lack of public funding this summer, and in turn, many youth and families experienced deeper hardships during these summer months. In an effort to better understand and elevate the continued need for funding, OregonASK is continuing to collect data. We will be aiming to launch our survey August 10th- check back HERE for updates.
As we shared previously, the forecast for the Summer Without Funding was quite bleak for Oregon's rural communities. We also anticipate long term impacts with a growing distrust in an ‘Equitable’ system, deeper dismantling of youth development workforce, and continued destabilization for disengaged youth. We hope you can help take a few minutes to complete the survey this summer and stay involved by signing up for Policy Updates HERE.
The Oregon Summer Learning Collaborative has moved into the next phase to pursue 5 major priority goals related to common datasets, building a funding model that supports long-term investment, collective program quality, defining and creating infrastructure for effective operations, and coordination of messaging across state to effectively communicate impact and need.
Contact Bethany.Thramer@oregonask.org if you are interested in joining a team.

How often do youth in your program get to choose what they’re investigating or designing, the materials they might use, and/or how they engage with the work? In this module, participants try out strategies for elevating youth voice and choice and apply the ideas as they redesign a STEM activity to incorporate a greater variety of youth input.
*The expectation is that you will be live at all three sessions and an active member of this coaching cohort. Recordings are not available if you are unable to attend. Completion of the Asking Purposeful Questions module is a prerequisite for this module.

Temporary FREE ACCESS to Our Online Course on Integrating Youth Entrepreneurship in STEAM Activities
If you already do some fun science and STEAM activities in your programs and want to take the learning to the next level this year, add in some learning about entrepreneurial skills & mindsets! It's easy and incredibly impactful for future academic and career success. Through simple activities like asking purposeful questions, playing time filler games, showing short videos, or scheduling virtual guest speakers, you can integrate meaningful learning about entrepreneurial skills & mindsets (like problem-solving, collaboration, idea generation, empathy, and opportunity analysis) into the STEAM activities and projects you are already doing with youth in your program.
For a short time, we are giving FREE access to a new three-hour online course developed specifically for out-of-school-time program staff & coordinators through the end of August. By the end of the course, you will have learned several EASY ways to teach and reinforce entrepreneurial skills & mindsets in your programs, without needing to add any "extra" curriculum (although we know of some good curricula, too, in case you would like to do that as well).
In addition, VentureLab, our partner in Youth Entrepreneurship learning, has generously offered to give a $200 voucher to 10 Oregon youth program staff or coordinators, allowing free access to their online PD course called "Entrepreneurial Mindsets for Educators".
If you would like free access to either or both of these online courses, please email monica.mcqueen@oregonask.org.

They’ll talk about the similarities and differences between questioning in science versus questioning in engineering contexts.
*The expectation is that you will be live at all three sessions and an active member of this coaching cohort. Recordings are not available if you are unable to attend. Completion of the Asking Purposeful Questions module is a prerequisite for this module. Register HERE with the code AC251VC
