UTCA ON MASSIVE FUNDING INEQUITY OF INFRASTRUCTURE DOLLARS TO NEW JERSEY:

WE ARE GETTING FLEECED…AGAIN

Utility and Transportation Contractors Association (UTCA) Executive Director David Rible issued the following statement on August 24, 2022 regarding a report from the National Resources Defense Council which shows that New Jersey is getting the second least amount of federal funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, per lead line, of any state:

“This is absolutely outrageous. Time and time again New Jersey sends money to Washington only to get fleeced in return.

“We, along with members of the Clean Water, Healthy Families, Good Jobs Coalition, warned of this exact scenario months ago when decisions were being made about funding. We specifically noted that this could happen without changes from the Environmental Protection Agency. Those changes never happened and now we have been shortchanged again.

“It is unacceptable to think that New Jersey’s water infrastructure needs are lacking enough to be second to last in funding. In fact, it’s ludicrous. We have some of the oldest water infrastructure in the country, including grossly outdated combined sewer overflow systems that need to be addressed as soon as possible. Moreover, as we showed in Newark, we know how to do this and do it right, so long as the necessary resources are there.

“Our members made New Jersey a shining example of how to fix broken water infrastructure. They stand ready, willing and able to do it again throughout our state. We just need the federal government to get its act together and give us our fair share of funding.”

UTCA's Dan Kennedy was invited by the Chamber of Commerce Southern NJ for a session on New Jersey's environmental regulations and how they are impacting construction and development. Joining Dan were:

  • Gina Sullivan - Business Development, Engineers Labor Employer Cooperative ELEC; Chair, CCSNJ Construction Council
  • Daniel Ortega - Community Affairs, Engineers Labor Employer Cooperative ELEC
  • Dennis Toft, Esq. - Chair, Environmental Law Group, Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi PC

We thank the Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey's President/CEO Christina Renna for this opportunity and look forward to our continued partnership moving forward.

The New Jersey Senate and Assembly Environment Committees held a joint meeting in Toms River this month on climate change and resiliency. A variety of speakers testified on these issues and legislation to increase the percentage of the state’s energy that comes from renewable sources and a bill to divest state pension funds from fossil fuel companies.

Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette spoke about the need to prepare for climate change and rising sea levels that will have a serious impact on coastal communities.  He mentioned Hurricane Ida and Superstorm Sandy and increasing rainfall totals as evidence of the urgent need to take action to protect the state from the effects of climate change and sea level rise.

UTCA attended the Committee meeting and will continue to monitor these bills which may be considered when the Legislature reconvenes next month.

Grassi, a leading provider of advisory, tax and accounting services for the construction and architecture and engineering (A&E) industries, has been named to the 2022 list of The Top 50 Construction Accounting FirmsTM by Construction Executive magazine. The annual list is compiled based on survey data collected from hundreds of U.S. accounting firms serving businesses in the construction and A&E sectors.

Grassi appears at #12 on the 2022 Top 50 list, which was determined based on an algorithm that factored firm revenues, number of construction CPAs, percentage of total revenues from construction practice, number of construction clients, number of office locations, number of years serving the industry, and number of professionals with Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP) certification.

In addition to ranking in the top half of the list, Grassi was ranked #4 in percentage of firm revenues from construction practice and #6 for number of CCIFPs. More than half of Grassi’s Construction partners hold the CCIFP designation.

UTCA Group Drug Testing Program

In response to federal and state drug testing requirements that continue to expand in impact and requests from members, UTCA has established a discounted Group Drug Testing program for association member firms. Our association drug testing program meets all federal and state “legal” requirements at a considerable cost savings to program participants.

The USDOT and State of New Jersey mandate that employers drug test all commercial motor vehicle drivers (both inter and intrastate drivers) and employees engaged in gas or hazardous material pipeline work. Many private owners also require a drug testing program of contractors and suppliers. Drug tests that are required include pre-employment, periodical, random, post accident and reasonable suspicion.

The firm administering the UTCA Group Drug Testing Program is Ambassador Medical Services (AMSI). AMSI specializes in all phases of employee drug testing programs, with considerable experience with contractors and utility owners. This firm has the capability to conduct on-site employee drug testing which provides considerable savings.
