Program Speaker
Award winning cartoonist, author and Arizona Daily Star editorial writer David Fitzsimmons
This serious photo does not begin to show the energy that comes from this terrific presenter. He self-describes:
Dave Fitzsimmons is an Editorial Cartoonist and Columnist for The Arizona Daily Star, where he began drawing cartoons back when Geronimo was just a paperboy, back in 1986. A Pulitzer Finalist, Fitz’s cartoons are syndicated to over 800 news publications around the world and last year the Arizona Press Club voted him the best columnist in the state. No one in the news or in his audience is safe when his pen is uncapped. Described as a “Flaming moderate at the fringe of America’s center,” Fitz is a snappy dresser who loves reading hate mail from readers and making his kids laugh.

Bobbie's News
Hello PaperWorks members!
I hope you are all doing well and finding new ways to connect and be creative during these hot(!) and trying times.
PaperWorks is gearing up! Megha Morganfield has three outstanding fall meeting presenters lined up so far, and as you can see, the kickoff in September will be memorable.
Our new board meets virtually on August 3, to make plans for our coming year, and we are excited. The brainstorming you, our members, have shared with us these last few months will guide us through the unique scenario before us - a fall and spring like no other. Do continue to call or send in your suggestions, so we can all benefit from your Muse in Quarantine! You are Originals, pure and simple, and we love our PaperWorks community of artists, together for almost two decades now.
We need to fill the Secretary position to make our board complete. Can you step up and help out? You'd take simple notes at our board meetings from a prepared agenda. That’s it, the whole job description. And during the meeting, you’ll be adding your own ideas and input to plan the direction of PaperWorks. The board meets about 6 times a year, and for now, it’s an easy Zoom call. Contact me at
wilsonbobbie@hotmail.com if you have can help out. I will help and guide you, and guarantee you will enjoy your time on the board!
Traveling Book Project Update
PaperWorks is collaborating with San Diego Book Arts and Bay Area Book Arts for this fun Challenge. Sign-ups from the three organizations were fantastic. Starting August 1, 75 artists will collaborate on art and bookmaking. For the next several months each one will make a simple book structure and create the first page of their book. Assigned groups of 6 will exchange the books and complete the pages, one by one. Each artist ends up with a book filled with guest artists’ work. Ideally, a catalog of the full project of finished books and a traveling exhibition of the books will be planned when feasible.
I’m thrilled that 20 PaperWorks members decided to make new friends in other bookarts groups through this project.
Virtual Studio Tours
A safe visit with you - what could be nicer! The next-best thing to an open house. When it’s virtual, everyone brings their own beverage of choice and whatever naughty sweet treat they most enjoy. We’re ready to come to your door - we just need an invitation! A studio tour and/or demos from your work area would be welcomed. If you’d allow fellow members to roam your creative space, we can seek a videographer to schedule a one-on-one visit, follow you around and then share your inner sanctum virtually with our membership. May we take a peek?
Member news
Laura Russell joined PaperWorks last year. For more than a decade, she was owner of 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, Oregon. I visited the gallery years ago and my kids bought me a delightful artist book from 23 Sandy not so long ago. Laura is now a snowbird here in Tucson and a delightful person. You can begin to appreciate Laura with a look at the article in Announcements.
Jade Quek, member of San Diego Book Arts and PaperWorks, has her eyes and ears and all her senses, really, focused on the world outside her doors. For a very long time, she has been an invaluable resource for many book and paper artists. I urge you to take a look at this month’s calendar that includes info from around the country. And read her latest (blew-me-away!) note to us all in the Announcements section below. You can sign up for her emailed updates - your world will expand, I promise. Thank you, Jade, for all the sharing!
Jade's current calendar is below at Link and plan.

Words Arranged Artfully
This month, let’s practice designing letters in words so they fit into a shape. Take an 8 1/2 “ square paper and lightly draw curving lines across the paper, left to right.
Take a favorite, meaningful short quote from a poem, song lyric or literary source and stretch the letters to fit across the page, between the curving lines, poster style, starting at the top and proceeding to the bottom. Experiment with the arrangement of the words to make a pleasing overall composition. You can go back in and fatten the letters to stretch into the space.
Take colored pencils or markers and play with the color wheel to choose colors that will emphasize separating the letters from the background. Remember that warm colors come forward and cool colors recede. Be as colorful or as subdued as you would like. See the examples below for a variety of ideas.
Bring your examples to our next meeting, whenever that will be. Or take a photo and email it to me so I can see what you have come up with!

Remember
- The Artful Use of Words is a guideline for this exhibition
- Collaborations encouraged

Introducing Laura Russell, new PaperWorks member
After a wonderful 13 years of heading the gallery, Laura Russell is passing the baton of her Portland, Oregon book and paper arts gallery 23 Sandy to colleague Erin Mickelson. Since its inception in 2007, Laura has grown 23 Sandy into an incredible venue for exhibiting artist books and paper art, featuring a talented roster of artists from around the world. Laura’s diligent work, enthusiasm, and involvement in the book arts community over the years inspires much gratitude. We wish her the very best as she heads to her studio to focus on her own art practice. View her art here:

from Lyn Hart
BotanicalColors.com, a company that sells supplies and (usually) hosts workshops for artists who use natural dyes in their work (and they also carry beautiful inks for use on paper) is hosting free Zoom presentations every Friday. Next week, it's going to be this one
botanicalcolors.com
I watched my first one this past Friday, which was about crafting and using earthen pigments - it was fabulous! A recorded version of it can be viewed at
And their collection of previously aired Zoom presentations can be seen at
from Jade Quek
I hope everyone is staying physically, mentally and emotionally safe during this time of pandemic. I hope you are also making lots of wonderful and amazing things for others to enjoy. Perhaps you are like me and there are gaps in between making and creating where I add lots of videos to view in my Watch Later folder in YouTube. I won't even tell you how many videos I have there! However, I have been trying to attend Zoom meetings when I can - I even cleaned up the area where I sit for these meetings even though the camera is not pointing down!
I even attempted a shelter in place collaborative project which turned my crafting area into a pile of failed templates of 3 miniature structures which were then tucked into a tri-fold brochure with pockets and flaps (more sad, failed templates) that was closed with a half circle in a slit. Multiplied by 6 and all less than 3"x3"! What was I thinking?!? In the end it was immensely satisfying to mail out the miniature structures protected by strips of mat board, washi tape and bubble wrap!
Bobbie mentioned the Teamup calendar I coordinate. The link is at the bottom of her newsy update each month - here it is again.
teamup.com
About the calendar:
There is no difference between Calendar 1 (blue entries) and 2 (red entries), just a way to visually separate workshops; orange and light teal (again just visual separation) entries are online workshops; light green ones are newly found workshops since the last email update; purple entries are for festivals or conferences.
You can do a search (magnifying glass search button in upper right of screen) by state, town, instructor name, etc. (currently testing to check if I can use tags in one of the empty fields)
Monthly view is best viewed using a larger monitor with desktop/laptop. To change view look for Scheduler, Day, ... Month ... Agenda, List in upper right corner of screen and click on appropriate view.
If using cell, mobile or smart phone change view to List, Day or Agenda view using button with the down arrow in upper right corner of screen.
Agenda (list view from current day going forward) or List (list view for current month going forward).
Now for some highlights of what’s coming up. If you are looking for better lighting when you’re on a Zoom meeting, check out that link under the "All things paper/books/tips/trips" section
www.howtogeek.com
Look for these in the calendar’s “newly found” green listings: A workshop you may want to take if you intend to start teaching online, offered on Aug. 18. And sometimes writing down your mission statement may help focus you in on what you want to do, offered Aug. 25, 26 - How to write an artist statement and other promotional materials
How to draw and annotate on live video -
youtu.be (not a class)

The Mourning Project update
The Coronavirus may have canceled the April installation at the March of Dimes March for Babies in April, but it’s now online. You can find your panel in the overall image, or even find an individual pair of booties that have been attached to the panels.
Many thanks to Janet Windsor for creating the online display. It is awesome! The project to bring attention to the problem of infant mortality in our country is about halfway to its bootie count goal of 23,000 pairs!
