Focusing on Hope
During quarantine, many of us have shifted how we spend our ‘free time’. For Prevent Child Abuse Arizona Executive Director Claire Louge, the extra time at home has been spent creating collages from positive words and phrases found in magazines. The piece photographed here is focused on our hope for Arizona- one in which prevention of child abuse is central to our shared work. (The blue pinwheel is the symbol of safe, happy childhood.)
If you were to dream of your hope for children in Arizona, what would your collage include?

The Positive Parenting Ripple Effect
Through the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family’s State Opioid Response Grant, Prevent Child Abuse Arizona has been able to certify 60 new practitioners to deliver Triple P – Positive Parenting Program ® this year.
Triple P is a parenting and family support system designed to prevent – as well as treat – behavioral and emotional problems in children and teenagers.
One recent certified practitioner, who works with families in rural Arizona, was able to apply the knowledge he acquired immediately to his own family: “I got so much from that training. So much so, that my wife and I practiced some of the parenting techniques with our own children. We have a very challenging 4-year-old we adopted where we have tried nearly any parenting strategy (within reason) without success. Setting up some of the ground work implemented in Triple P has already helped in only a week’s time. I’m excited for the opportunity to teach this to some of the parents in Apache County as I feel it will really make a difference over time.”

You Can Make a Difference
You’ve had to deal with so much in recent weeks. Everything has just felt ... harder.
I know that’s true for the families we serve at Prevent Child Abuse Arizona. Even experienced parents have felt sad, alone, and at times, angry about all the ways that COVID-19 has upended our lives.
And they’re not always sure how to help their kids, either.
Our Executive Director Claire Louge is donating her entire stimulus check to PCAAZ as a matching gift. That means she’ll match your gift – dollar for dollar – up to $1,200.
If you can, please make a much-needed gift to PCAAZ today. Any amount helps!

The Power of Transparency
By Claire Louge
Early in my career, I subscribed to the ‘fake it ‘til you make it’ mindset. I thought that in order to prove my professional worth, I had to demonstrate perpetual competence. If I l didn't possess a skill, I needed to feign it until I actually figured it out. If I didn’t know what someone was talking about at a meeting, I had to sit there and nod, pretending that I did. I thought knowledgeability was what earned respect, and I didn’t want to be perceived as lacking it.
I know better now.
Seven months ago, I was promoted to executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Arizona. There has been so much to learn. Some things I knew I needed to learn (like nonprofit finance processes), but some things I didn’t know I didn’t know, and I needed to learn those things too (leading an organization through a pandemic).
Through my time in this role so far, I’ve committed to being transparent with what I don’t know, and open with my learning process. If someone says an acronym I don’t recognize, I ask them to define it. If a person assumes I know something and is having a conversation with me about it, it’s unfair to them, and unproductive for us both, for me to fake understanding. I ask them to teach me.
It’s helped me learn a lot. Not faking it is helping me ‘make it.’
Keep in mind, how you ask for more information is key....
