Letter from the president
Greetings, journalism friends! Miriam here.
Who said summer was the slow season?

There's lots going on at New Jersey SPJ, but our biggest piece of news is this: Our national organization has named the T. Thomas Fortune House in Red Bank an SPJ National Historic Site in Journalism!

The house, now a cultural center, was once the home of T. Thomas Fortune , one of the most influential black journalists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

We're thrilled -- especially since, sadly, Fortune's legacy has been largely forgotten and deserves to be resurrected. We hope this national recognition will help boost efforts to shine a light on an important under-reported story about African-American journalism history.

Shout out to the many people who worked so hard to make this happen, especially John Ensslin, our immediate-past chapter president, who orchestrated the campaign to get SPJ's national designation, and Barbara Reed, a retired Rutgers journalism professor and a former New Jersey SPJ board member/chapter president, who first brought the Fortune House to our attention three years ago.

FREE Google training in Hoboken on Aug. 14
Need to boost your digital skills? Here's your chance to get an overview of useful Google tools, thanks to SPJ's partnership with the Google News Initiative .

The training will take place from 6-8 p.m. Wed., Aug. 14 at the Hoboken Historical Museum, 1301 Hudson St., Hoboken. It will cover Google Search, Google Images, Google Public Data, Google Trends and YouTube.

The event is free, but you need to RSVP/register. Click here for the registration page.

The event is aimed at journalists, students, public relations people and other content producers. You don't have to be an SPJ member to take attend -- though, of course, we hope opportunities like this one will help convince you that SPJ has value and deserves your support.

The workshop will be taught by Victoria "Vix" Reitano ( @vixinthecity ). Vix did a training session for New Jersey SPJ in February 2017 and has more than a decade of experience in content creation, storytelling and digital marketing. She is one of the original Google News Initiative Trainers and started working with professionals at universities and in newsrooms globally in 2015. She is also the founder + CEO of 6boro Social, a creative digital agency.
SPJ membership discounts through Aug. 19!
If you need to renew your SPJ membership (or are just a lurker who never actually joined), now's the time to get on track.

In honor of SPJ's 110th anniversary, the national headquarters is holding a "membership sale.''

The discounted professional memberships are $50/year; students and post-grads are $25/year. Prices are good through Aug. 19.

So why not do it? To reach the SPJ membership page, click here -- and don't forget to take the extra step and join the New Jersey chapter ! (Shameless plug: Our chapter is 100 percent volunteer-run, and we rock! To see a list of our accomplishments over the last five years, see the "about'' page on our web site and scroll down past the board bios. )
That's it for now!

Enjoy the rest of the summer,

Miriam Ascarelli
chapter president, New Jersey SPJ
