The history of Padron Cigars is very much a "rags to riches" kind of story.  Padron Cigars (a.k.a. Piloto Cigars) was founded in 1968 by Jose Orlando Padron.  Jose is a Cuban born refugee and from a family of tobacco workers.  His grandfather immigrated to Cuba in the mid 1800's from the Canary Islands.  After saving their earnings over many years, Jose's ancestors purchased their first cigar tobacco farm in Cuba.  Since then they have continued buying farms, including a factory in Piloto.
Jose Padron moved from Cuba in 1961 at age 35 after the Revolution when Fidel Castro nationalized his families tobacco farms.  Jose settled in Miami where he was making only $60 a month from the Cuban government as aid to the refugees.  At a time when Jose Padron was virtually penniless, he received a gift from a friend that turned his life around, a hammer.  This one item allowed Jose to start a career as a carpenter and saved $600.00 to launch the Padron cigar brand.

Padron Cigars has withstood protests, and bombings, fires to their crops in Nicaragua, political unrest, and natural disasters.  Now their sales exceed over $150 million a year.
