Trivia Night Fundraiser Fun!
Trivia Enthusiasts Raise Money for BHS Athletics
|
Thanks to the spirited group of Beaver boosters who joined us for our second Trivia Night fundraiser of the year Wednesday night at the Elks Club, raising more than $2,000 in support of the Athletic Booster Club (ABC).
We are grateful to BHS parent alums Kelly Jones and (recently retired longtime BHS Administrative Assistant) Cindy Peterson, who hosted the trivia game, while team members took on the coaches' team for the coveted ABC Trivia Championship. Just like a true Ballard contest, the BHS Fight Song was played, and Bucky the Beaver showed up to cheer the teams on. While the coaches did not emerge victorious, we thank them for being great sports and supporting our student athletes!

Best Team Name: "Bucky Beaver for $200"
Top Trivia Team: "Ex XCs"
Thanks to everyone who attended and donated. We are grateful to the Ballard Elks Club and staff who have hosted many board meetings and trivia night fundraisers on behalf of ABC.

We'd also like to thank raffle donors: Lisa Vanderford Anderson (senior photography package); Ballard Elks (wine and glasses); BHS alum parents Karri and Billy Marshall (Deschutes Beer and pint glasses); and Kelly and Dave Jones (gift certificate to BHS alums Matt Kelly and Tony Meyer's new Golden Gardens eatery, Kite Cafe).

From Coach Doug Montgomery:
"Baseball finished 17-8 overall, 15-6 in the regular season, and reached their goal of making State for the first time in 23 years (2001) but fell short of advancing in the 1st round of the state tournament, with a 5-4 loss to Edmonds-Woodway. Senior Captain Chase Edwards was voted 1st Team All-Metro Outfielder, senior Captain Adam Tripp was voted 1st Team All-Metro infielder, junior Captain Truitt Madonna was voted 1st Team All-Metro catcher, and junior Dylan Wallblom was voted 2nd Team All-Metro pitcher. Once again, all three teams in the program finished with winning records, with JV finishing 13-9 and JVC finishing 11-9. JV Coach Nick Thornton-Jack also won his 100th game this season!"

From Coach Ray Pryphun:
"The Boys Lacrosse team ended their season on May 22, facing off against Mercer Island in the 3A state semifinals. This season was marked by significant achievements and milestones:
- Finished the season with a 12-5 record
- Won Metro Public conference for the second consecutive year, a first for the program
- A record number of 8 players selected for the All-Metro team
- Reached the 3A State Semifinal for the first time in program history
As the lacrosse season comes to a close, we say goodbye and thank you to our seniors - Captain Carter Garrison (2nd team All-Metro x2), Captain Luke Berard (1st team All-Metro x2), Tom Delaney (2nd team All-Metro), and Henry Perkins! We wish them the best of luck in the future.
Thank you to the community for your support. The team fielded both V and JV teams, and
received incredible coaching and leadership from 5 coaches led by Ray Pryphun.
Congratulations to all other All-Metro players: Spencer Bos (Junior, 1st Team), Captain Davis Brewster (Junior, 2nd Team), Aiden Gray (Sophomore, 2nd Team), Jonny Sugg (Junior, 1st Team), Captain Owen Willis (Junior, 1st Team). Congratulations to all players for an outstanding season!"

From Coaches Bella Terrones, Rachel Moody, and Cassie Ford:
"The 2024 Girls Lacrosse season was very exciting for the Ballard Beavers! We saw some big transformations within the program, such as a fresh coaching staff and the consolidation into a unified varsity team. The girls concluded the season with a commendable 7-5 record and set new regular season records, including draw controls and assists. Guided by stellar senior leadership, the team showed positivity and resilience throughout. We are so proud of these girls and are confident this program will
continue to grow and strengthen. We cannot wait to see where this team goes in the future!"

From Coach Clark Murray:
"Metro League Soccer is the best and most competitive league in the state of Washington. We prove this over and over when headed into the postseason. With Ballard Soccer in the higher of the two divisions for Metro League we have to play the best other seven schools in the league twice. Ballard started off the season with few good wins and a gritty tie to Seattle Prep. Yet we soon found our luck to run out. With three own goals and a few easy penalty giveaways we were losing some pretty close games. We started to pick up some major injuries which led to some players playing out of their comfortable positions and we were headed to playoffs in 6th out of the 8 teams in our division. With a comfortable 2-0 win over Nathan Hale in our first playoff game at home, the Beavers decided it was now or never to step up. With the team confident and healthy once again we put together a nice couple of wins and found ourselves in the Metro League Final against Seattle Prep who we had tied and lost to in the regular season. Taking the final all the way to penalty kicks with a score of 1-1 in regular time we sadly could not overcome their goalkeeper and were sent home to think about how we would get payback in the state tournament. Our first State Tournament game found us back in a penalty kick shootout, which this time the boys easily won with the help of our goalkeeper Hadden Muench. With some newfound enthusiasm we strung together a couple of 2-0 shutout upsets against the 2nd seeded and 7th seeded teams in state. At the conclusion of state tournament play, Ballard placed third in state. Go Beavs!"
Congratulations to the players honored on the First Team Metro Mountain: Jack Rollins and Hadden Muench; Second Team Metro Mountain: Cole Frech and Henry Peters
and Honorable Mention: Finn Lepper.

From Coach Dale Griffith (who was also recently named Metro League Coach of the Year):
"In Fastpitch Softball, after winning the Metro League Championship, Coach Griffith becomes only the third coach in school history to bring home the title, marking the school's fifth since 1996 and the SeaKing District 2 Tournament trophy (last won 2002) the past two weekends. The Beavers found themselves back in the State Tournament for the third consecutive year in a row, tying the school record set back in 2000-02. Coach Griffith and the #2 ranked Ballard Beavers Softball program headed to Lacey for the 2024 WIAA 3A Softball State Tournament and went 2-2. The Beavers were led by senior Captains #1 Liz Bell, #5 Trinity Miller and #13 Addy Wynkoop, returning several players from last year's tournament team and had an influx of freshmen who were key contributors. This is a young, yet resilient group of student-athletes and we aren’t satisfied with just qualifying for state … we came to win ball games!”

From Coach Angel Le:
"The tennis team had an exciting and transformative spring season. Under new leadership, our players demonstrated remarkable growth, dedication, and sportsmanship.
Here are some of our key achievements, challenges, and memorable moments from the season: Our girls team started off the season undefeated with a 4-0 record, a significant improvement from previous seasons. Our boys team had an early season upset by beating Ingraham High School and ended the season on a high note with an upset win against Eastside Catholic School in our last match of the regular season.
We had 12 players represent Ballard in the Metro League Tennis Tournament. In singles, we had Mia Aldahondo (seeded 6th in the tournament), Cami Martinez, Moritz Scheunemann, and Alex Manelski. In doubles, we had Sienna Lee/Sabi Yoon, Kira Helman/Amara Fontes, Jackson Jobe/Kian Graham, and Cole Nguyen/Alton Naumann. Despite tough first-round matches against seeded players and the nuisance of rain delays, every Ballard player competed with enthusiasm, integrity, and mental strength. We are so proud of them! The dedication and hard work of our players, combined with support from parents and the community, set a solid foundation for this season’s success. We look forward to building on this momentum in the upcoming seasons!"

From Coach Neal Howard:
"Despite cold and wet weather early on this spring, the Track and Field team managed to grow for the third consecutive year! With over 180 students joining the track and field team there was a lot of excitement going into the competitive season. The season started off with the girls team winning the 36 team Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham, and the boys team finished a strong 2nd. The girls team continued this success during the season and into the post season where they finished 2nd at the Metro championship, the best girls track and field Metro League finish in school history! After qualifying a school record 30 students to the District Championship 15 of those students made it through to the State Championship meet. Anchored with a 2nd place finish in the girls 3200m run by Cassidy Armstrong at state, the girls team placed 19th, only the 7th time in school history the team has finished in the top 20 at the state meet. This success would not have been possible without the strong leadership from the team leaders and captains. Those students will be missed and will leave a lasting legacy for years to come."
