A Message from our Director

It's a New Year, and I am looking forward to the coming spring, new projects and new plans. In that spirit, I'd like to share a number of opportunities Delaware Sea Grant (DESG) has that might be of interest to members of our community.

Our biennial Request for Proposals for research projects addressing the Sea Grant focus areas and strategic plan is still open, with the required pre-proposals due by 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3. If you are a Delaware researcher, review our Request for Proposals webpage to learn more about this funding opportunity.

We also have two opportunities outside of research, one for graduate students and one for a new DESG staff member.

The annual John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship application period is open until Feb. 16. The Knauss Fellowship provides a unique educational experience in the policies and processes of the federal government to graduate students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting these resources. Fellows are matched with hosts in the legislative and executive branches of government located in the Washington, D.C. area. Learn more on our DESG Fellowship page and read about the Knauss Fellows who will start on Feb. 1 in the first story below.

Finally, if you are interested in the work we do at DESG, have a scientific education and would like to be a part of our efforts to improve Delaware's coastal communities and their environment, check out our job listing for a coastal ecologist. We are seeking someone with a master's degree in coastal ecology, field biology, or a related discipline plus two years’ experience in outreach education or related experience. The coastal ecologist will be responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs focused on addressing marine issues and concerns of the state of Delaware, including marine debris, habitat protection/restoration, and water quality. Application review begins on Jan. 23 (Monday!), so apply as soon as you can.

Whether any of these opportunities are of interest to you personally or if you pass them along, thank you for your support for DESG. Everything we do rests on invaluable partnerships with students, faculty, scientists and our statewide community.

Best wishes,

Joanna York
