We move into 2018 in high gear. Our service programs continue to be our focus and the wonderful member volunteers, who make up our Assistance League ohana, make all things possible.

for being such a gracious hostess at her lovely (and beautifully decorated) home for our holiday pot luck gathering. It is always fun to take a break from our important work to just enjoy each other's company.
We bid a fond aloha to our member,
Diana Poteet
, who has begun a new chapter in her life, moving to Florida, near her son and grandson. She will certainly be missed here.
As you make your New Year's resolutions this year, please include a renewed commitment to our organization and the people of Hawaii who we serve. Each of you makes a difference to someone in our community.
Remember: "Volunteers are not paid because they're worthless, but because they're priceless."

Assistance League of Hawaii Regular Meeting for January 10, 2018
The Assistance League of Hawaii will hold its Regular Meeting on January 10, 2018 at the Oahu Country Club. Ellen Wilson is our member host to the club. The Regular Meeting will begin at 10:30 AM with breakfast first. We will likely start eating by 10:45 AM.
The cost for buffet breakfast is $28.00, and will include eggs, potatoes, bacon, danish rolls with juice, coffee or tea,

Our greatest asset by far is our devoted members. However, close on the heels of "us" is our building and property at 1505 Young Street.
We are on track to pay off our mortgage in 2021 (oh joy!!), but I thought you might be interested in seeing how much of our hard-earned Thrift Shop surplus dollars we have spent, not on our cherished programs, but on maintenance and improvement of our "brick and mortar."
In this fiscal year (since June 1st) we have spent the following on major improvements or maintenance of the building:
Painting of building exterior: $14,504
Roof maintenance: $1035
Security fencing: $7410
Elevator repair and load test: $4592
Air conditioning repair: $1686
Repair of security cameras: $131
GRAND TOTAL: $29,358
This is money well-spent to keep us going as the best Thrift Shop in Hawaii!

A reminder to Officers and Committee Chairs: Please review your current budget for 2017 - 2018 and determine if you have sufficient funds available to fulfill your goals for the year. Notify the Finance Committee if budget adjustments need to be made.
A planning meeting for the 2018 - 2019 budget will be in February. Please be thinking about your budgetary needs for next year.

Our last In-Store Shopping Event is scheduled for Saturday, January 27 at WalMart in Kapolei. We are expecting 150 students from Ma'ili Elementary and Waipahu Elementary Schools. We will need lots of Member Volunteers that day. Please contact

With the generous support of the Tutu program (thanks
LaVonne Holmberg), our Hawaii Chapter will participate in Legacy of Literacy day on February 24, 2018 with a project to support a school library in Kalihi. The goal of National Assistance League is to have all 120 chapters participate as they did last year, and you can help, too. We'll be collecting donations at the next meeting at the Oahu Country Club on January 10. We can all contribute to
Making Literacy a Priority
with your personal donation.

We have only one presentation so far on Oahu. This will be at Mokapu Elementary school at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe, January 17, 2018. We also have two neighbor island trips in January; both are to Hilo.
We want to welcome Anne Ranaldo back to the islands and Assistance League of Hawaii in January.

A Reflection....
Another New Year will soon be here. Thanks to all of you who have worked so hard upstairs and downstairs to enable the Thrift Shop to earn enough money to sponsor our programs. Hopefully, with all of our helping hands, 2018 will be just as successful. Special thanks are extended to
