Arts Orange County Offers Two Upcoming Workshops for Individual Artists

ArtsOC is offering two free workshops for artists beginning with The Art of Advocacy at The Muckenthaler Cultural Center on Tuesday, June 11 at 3:00 p.m. This workshop will provide an introduction to advocacy, including how to share your story in a way that makes a difference and how to cultivate relationships with elected officials and their staffs. Basic Finance for Artists - Empowering Artists Through an Introduction to Finance and Taxes will be held at Media Arts Santa Ana's TVGB Digital Maker Space on Wednesday, June 12 at 6:00 p.m. This workshop provides a basic overview of some of the things an individual artist needs in order to navigate what can often be seen as a mysterious world of budgeting, reporting and taxes.

Asian Hall of Fame Partners with

Orange County Music & Dance to Build Performing Arts Center 

The Asian Hall of Fame and Orange County Music & Dance will partner to build a state-of-the-art performing arts center at the Great Park in Irvine. The 15,000 square feet, 800-seat venue will cost approximately $15 million, of which Asian Hall of Fame will provide $8 million. When it opens, the Asian Hall of Fame Performing Arts Center will become the first Asian and Indigenous PAC in the United States. The world-class concert hall will host student performances and community groups in music, dance and theatre, as well as be a permanent home for the Asian Hall of Fame and its cross-cultural content.

Musical Inventions

Leo Harjanto and Naya Sterritt perform with the Wube Tubes at E-SONIC

Pacific Symphony has partnered with the UC Irvine Samueli School of Engineering and the Claire Trevor School of the Arts in launching E-Sonic, their first instrument design competition. Their hope is to inspire students to think about the future of orchestral instruments through design and imagination.

Opportunities

The Western States Arts Federation, which includes California, is now accepting applications for Cultural Sustainability: A WESTAF Grants and Peer Cohort Program for Arts Organizations of Color. This new grant opportunity targets organizations with annual operating budgets below $500,000 that boast a minimum of three years of programming history in communities of color:

The Alliance for California Traditional Arts has announced that applications for their Living Cultures Grant are now open. This program seeks to sustain and strengthen traditional arts in the state of California with $7,500 grants to individual artists/culture bearers and $10,000 grants to California-based nonprofits and Tribal Nations, as well as other organizations and community groups who work with fiscal sponsors.

Interim Leadership Announced at Langson Institute & Museum of California Art

Richard Aste has been named Interim Museum Director of the Langson Institute & Museum of California Art. Aste is the founder of Rich Aste Executive Coaching LLC, serving leaders and their teams in the arts and higher education. Since 2022, he has served as an executive coach for the UC Irvine New Leader Program. Prior to that, Aste was director and CEO of the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas.

Temporary Amphitheater Set

to Open in Great Park

The City of Irvine is preparing to open Great Park Live, a temporary amphitheater that can host up to 5,000 people and will feature a food and beverage hub. Starting June 14, the amphitheater will begin hosting tribute concerts. Pacific Symphony will start its summer concert season, dubbed SummerFest, on July 4 with a fireworks show and salute to the Armed Forces.

In Memoriam 

Linda Gehringer and Jeff Biehl in South Coast Repertory's production of How to Write a New Book for the Bible

News of well-known Orange County actress Linda Gehringer was recently announced. After moving to Laguna Beach, she appeared in Steven Metcalfe’s play “Strange Snow” at Laguna Playhouse in 1994. After that she was seen in 23 productions and numerous play readings at South Coast Repertory, beginning with “Good as New” in 1997. Her work extended past Orange County into television, including a recurring role on “Evening Shade.” Her film credits include “American Pie” and “As Good as it Gets.”

OC Arts Awards Tickets Now Available

Tickets are now available for the 24th OC Arts Awards, which will be held on September 24 in the Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. This celebratory event brings together the entire arts community for an uplifting evening that includes an honoree and sponsor reception and dinner, an awards ceremony and an after-party for all guests.
