Arts and Culture Learning Opportunities, Fall 2024

For many people, fall sends the signal that it is time to explore new horizons and gain new knowledge. Franklin’s Historical Museum, Public Library, Recreation Department, and Senior Center offer a variety of learning opportunities each month. Organizations like the Franklin Art Association and Garden Club have a “learning opportunity” as part of their monthly meetings.


In addition to town departments and Franklin organizations, there are numerous businesses that offer instruction in a variety of interests associated with arts and culture. Visit the Cultural District website, Education, and learn about education opportunities in Franklin-based schools and Houses of Worship. Additionally, there are Cultural District businesses that provide instruction in art, dance, drama, fiber, history, music instruments, science, theater, and other areas of learning. School groups are sponsoring fundraisers. Safe Coalition is sponsoring Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 on the Town Common.

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is observed each August 31. On this day, communities worldwide come together to reduce overdose stigma, increase understanding and awareness, remember those who died of overdose, and prevent drug-related harm. The Franklin Garden Club will begin its 2024--2025 season with an informal social get-together from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. followed by an overview of programs planned for the year and preparation of items that will be sold at the Franklin Harvest Festival. The meeting is open to the public, including those interested in becoming a member.

Wednesday September 4, 6:30pm: Franklin Art Association Monthly Meeting & Demonstration by artist, Kim Weineck. The Franklin Art Association invites the public to their monthly meeting. The guest demonstration - artist is Kim Morin Weinect, the fine art painter for this month's meeting. She will be giving a fine art gouache, step by step demonstration. Her work can be found at Gallery 9 in Norwood, Zullo Gallery in Medfield, the Design Center at Franklin Mill Store and other venues. Thursday, September 12, 7:00pm, Purple Turtle Productions and event co-sponsors, IYRS School of Technology and Trades, will host the premiere of Episode 1 of The Boatbuilders at the JPT Film and Event Center in Newport, RI.

The Boatbuilders is a documentary series that explores the rich legacy and present-day impact of the boatbuilding community in the northeastern United States. The premiere episode highlights Rhode Island’s maritime heritage and features local organizations dedicated to the preservation and restoration of historic sailing vessels.

The Director, Gregg Seibert, currently serves as Assistant Professor of Communications and Video Production at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts. The Producer, R. A. Lawson is a Professor of History and Director of the Honors Program at Dean College. For more information about this documentary, select Turtle.

Saturday, September 14, 7:30pm, An Evening with the Aging Ingenue! at THE BLACK BOX. Join Broadway’s Sara Jean Ford for a night of music and comedy celebrating one of musical theater’s most quintessential heroines, the ingénue.
