Thank You and Looking Ahead...

Thank you Dr. Jon Ceander Mitchell

The premier of the chamber opera Mary Anning: Fossil Hunter took place in Franklin on June 9th. The opera, composed by area resident Dr. Jon Ceander Mitchell, tells the true story of a 19th century woman from coastal England whose work to collect fossils to help support her family became a life-long passion. She made many significant discoveries, but was denied credit by the scientific community because of her gender, lack of formal education and social status. Mitchell, a retired music professor, composed the opera during the pandemic. It is the culmination of years of research undertaken with his son, David.

The performance included five soloists, an 8-piece chamber orchestra conducted by Luis Viquez, and a dozen members of the Greater Milford Community Chorus. It took place at the First Universalist Society of Franklin before a receptive audience of about 80 people. The opera was further enhanced by a brief pre-performance lecture by paleontologist David Fastovsky about the science and intellectual climate of the times.

The performance was supported in part by Cultural Investment Funds from the Mass Cultural Council through the Franklin Cultural District Committee

Thank you. The Night of the Arts at Kennedy Elementary School and Parmenter Elementary School... a Celebration!
Faculty, staff and students from Parmenter and Kennedy Elementary Schools are grateful for the Cultural Investment Funds from the Mass Cultural Council and the Franklin Cultural District Committee. They enjoyed two beautiful event nights and the special performance was a huge success with a great turnout at both schools. Mary MacMurray, music faculty member at both schools, helped to coordinate and implement the Night of the Arts.
