Beginnings

Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect.

- Alan Cohen

For those who are familiar with ABC Institute, you may have heard the phrase, “creative and courageous leadership.” We try to not only celebrate those who practice that type of leadership but model it as well. Over the last three years ABC Institute has developed virtual spaces and contributed to digital databases. Were the conditions perfect to launch such an endeavor? Were our efforts flawless? No. Are we learning every day? Are we improving our ability to equitably serve teachers and their students? Yes!

As your new year begins, we invite you to connect with ABC Institute and the larger state-wide community through our on-going digital spaces.

Join the ABC Network app. This is an app designed by educators for educators. Operated and managed by ABC Institute, you can join chat rooms, stay up-to-date on opportunities and events, and access resources. (for both Apple and Android)

Register for One Stop Workshop, a free virtual conference for professional learning in a variety of discipline specific arts education and arts integration topics.

We hope you will join the ABC Network Community, not only celebrate the perfect moments but seek support and inspiration during the not-so-perfect moments. Keep striving!

Greetings, Arts Advocates!

A new school year means new opportunities to showcase the amazing work you’re doing, for your students and for your communities. Since the SC Legislature has adjourned for the year, and the US House is in recess until after Labor Day, the next few months can be a fantastic opportunity to invite leaders to your classrooms, performances, and events, and help them experience first hand the life changing power of arts education. Please let the SCAA know if we can help facilitate these connections!

Legislative Update

We’re thrilled to report that the South Carolina Budget process wrapped up in early July, and included a $3 million increase to statewide arts funding. We will continue to share with legislators the impact of this public investment, both in arts education and the creative sector at large.

In Washington, the House version of National Endowment for the Arts funding included a 1.5% reduction, but advocates helped defeat an amendment that would have resulted in a $48 million cut to the agency. We’re now turning our attention to the Senate, who included a $2 million increase to the NEA in their committee recommendation. You can help us secure this increase by contacting your legislators here.

We’re also tracking further funding for Arts Education through the Department of Education’s ESAA funding. Check out our recent blog post if you’re interested in learning more about these funding opportunities for districts.

South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities

As we celebrate our 25th year as a residential high school, the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities looks forward to celebrating the arts-rich learning environment on our campus and empowering our path forward in continuing to support teachers and students throughout South Carolina. We have an exciting year ahead celebrating this milestone anniversary, and we hope you will bookmark our events page to join us at one of the many events planned. Stay tuned for more information!

This summer, the Office of Outreach piloted Coastal Creatives in collaboration with Horry Georgetown Technical College. Students from six schools/homeschools in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area had an immersive week “exploring how we work together to solve problems of all shapes and sizes” through creative challenges and collaborative arts experiences. We are looking forward to expanding this program over the course of the year.

We’ve also added a new team member, Kellianne Floyd, as Assistant Director of Outreach. Kellianne comes to us from a background of 19 years as a K-12 Dance Educator.  She has experience in creating and building dance programs across the state and is looking forward to working with the Governor’s School and our state’s wonderful outreach community!
