Celebrates 20 Years

It was 20 years ago that the Arts & Learning Conservatory began as a musical theatre camp run by Debora Wondercheck. She offered 21 children lessons in acting, singing and playing musical instruments. Now the nonprofit serves close to 3,800 children a year in schools throughout Orange, Los Angeles and Riverside counties. To celebrate their 20th anniversary, the Conservatory recently invited the community to tour their newly renovated, high-tech Costa Mesa performing arts center.

South Coast Repertory Receives Edgerton Foundation New Play Award

Theatre Communications Group recently announced that South Coast Repertory and playwright Noa Gardner have been awarded a 2024-25 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award for Gardner’s play The Staircase. The program allows productions extra time for the development and rehearsal of new plays with the hope of extending the life of the world premiere play after its first run. The Staircase will debut at South Coast Repertory in Spring 2025.

Hilbert Museum Plays Host to Gold Medal Pieces of California Impressionism

Calvin Liang’s “Learning Sail in Newport Beach” is part of the 113th Gold Medal Exhibition of the California Art Club on display at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University through October 26.

The Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University is hosting the 113th Gold Medal Exhibition of the California Art Club. Since its 1909 inauguration, the California Art Club has been dedicated to promoting and supporting contemporary-traditional fine art by championing paintings and sculptures featuring representational practices. The Annual Gold Medal Exhibition is the most vital platform for demonstrating the best of the realist genre. This year’s iteration is the first time the Hilbert Museum has hosted the presentation in person as when they hosted the 109th and 110th editions of the exhibition, the pandemic forced organizers to move to a digital format.

New NEA-NEH Partnership Will Expand Data Available for Arts, Culture and Humanities

A new interagency partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts has been formed in an effort to better assess the health of nation’s nonprofit arts, cultural and humanities sector. The partnership will support and expand the American Academy of Arts & Sciences’ Humanities Indicators project, which will be renamed the National Inventory of Cultural Organizations.

Tickets Still Available for OC Arts Awards

Tickets are still available for the 24th OC Arts Awards, which will be held on September 24 in the Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. This celebratory event brings together the entire arts community for an uplifting evening that includes an honoree and sponsor reception and dinner, an awards ceremony and an after-party for all guests.
