Latest exhibit at R.I. T.F. Green International Airport features R.I. artists Ken Moran, Tyler Palmer, Callum Sharkey

GREEN SPACE Gallery at Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport, a partnership between the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC), has on display its summer exhibition featuring artworks by Ken Moran, Cumberland, and Tyler Palmer and Callum Sharkey, both Providence-based. The exhibition runs through late-January 2025.

Bios (provided by the artists)

Ken Moran is a photographer based in Cumberland. Born in Nassau County, Long Island, Moran was exposed to fine art from at an early age. He has always been fascinated by the diversity in form, color, and structure of plants and flowers and began photographing flowers and plants from around his neighborhood.

Tyler Palmer is a digital photographer and electronic musician based in Providence. They released their first solo album No End in 2019 and are one half of the experimental alternative R&B duo Empty Hour. Since the summer of 2022, Palmer has been making candid photos of everyday life. Their photography aims to dramatize the mundane.

Callum Sharkey is a street and nature photographer from Providence. While growing up in Rhode Island, Sharkey came to love photography as a way of capturing how he sees the world and sharing that with others. To Sharkey, everything and everyone has a story to tell. Even seemingly mundane moments happening all around us every day are filled with beauty and poetry and meaning. They just need to be shown in a certain light. He sees the value in these moments and hopes to tell a part of that story.

Public Art Call

R.I. Fire Academy Phase 3, Exeter, deadline is nearing

Eligibility: Open to all working artists from New England and New York. Students are ineligible to apply.

Budget: $28,000.

Deadline: Sept. 3, 2024

Artwork for Phase 3 of the R.I. Academy will be commissioned through Rhode Island’s Public Art Law, which mandates that 1 percent of all state capital construction and renovation funds be allocated to the purchase and maintenance of public art.

Through this program, the State recognizes that “public art creates a more humane environment: one of distinction, enjoyment, and pride for all citizens”. RISCA administers the selection process under the provisions of the law.

This unique project embodies the spirit and purpose of the RIFA training facility. As a possible jumping-off point, the panel would like artists to consider the essence of the building’s use and role in preparing the trainees for life in public service. Through RIFA’s rigorous, experiential training programs, trainees hone their skills, learn to work together, and develop confidence and trust in their abilities and each other. Fire service requires physical strength, teamwork, critical observational and communication skills, mental agility, and resilience. This is a job, a lifestyle and a vocational calling that cultivates a deep sense of belonging, of being part of a community with a storied tradition of service. Fire service requires dedication, courage, and support from family and friends.
