WELCOME TO LIZA LOU'S KITCHEN

Imagine seeing a life-sized kitchen layout that is made entirely of beads and found objects! Well, you can do just that at the Whitney Museum of Art in NYC. It took 5 years for artist Liza Lou to create The Kitchen, a spectacularly colorful, whimsical and deceptively delicious art installation in 1996. It is on permanent view at the Whitney and an absolute showstopper.

Why would someone create such a sculpture? Lou feels that her artwork is a commentary on the traditional role of women treating the kitchen as their domain. By combining it with the handicraft skill of beading (also led by women throughout the ages), she can showcase the American dream, consumerism and doing typical household chores in a unique way.

How did she do it? After careful research about the history of kitchen design, Liza Lou sculptured every object out of paper mâché. After covering it all with paint, she embellished everything with colorful beads resulting in a beautiful mosaic pattern on every surface.

Liza Lou is one of the artists showcased in our tomorrow morning's webinar, Artful Threads Contemporary Fiber Fine Artists. See below for registration information. If you can't make the date, you can still register and receive a replay that can be watched on your own schedule.

One Session: Andy Warhol: The Jewish Genius Debate

MAY 18 - MORNING 11AM-12PM - Cost: $40pp

Join Debbie Wells of Artful Buzz does a look at the life and art of Andy Warhol, including his creative process at The Factory. This talk focuses on his famous 1980 series depicting ten paintings of Jews of the 20th century. Nicknamed “Jewish Geniuses”, it included Golda Meir, Sarah Bernhardt, Sigmund Freud, George Gershwin, Albert Einstein, the Marx Brothers, Martin Buber, Louis Brandeis, Franz Kafka and Gertrude Stein. Wells presents both sides of the story – did Warhol create this series to appeal to wealthy Jewish buyers or to honor those icons? Did he represent them with respect or churn them out just like his celebrity portraits? Audience discussion encouraged for a lively debate.
