BE AN ART INSIDER WITH ME IN BROOKLYN!

BY DEBBIE WELLS

I am always looking online for the next great thing on the art scene and I came across this lovely art gallery's inaugural exhibition in Brooklyn. The curatorial concept and the artwork itself got my attention, so I contacted the Structural Color Gallery directly for more information. I spoke to Jelena Petrovic, one of the partners. We got into a great conversation about the story of the gallery, current exhibition and artist and goals for the future.

I covered the exhibition, Night Trees by Megumi Nagai, for one of my Artful Buzz Art Gallery & Museum Hops webinar series sessions and everyone agreed that this one was special. I wanted to take it a step further and visit the gallery myself.

Being a born and bred Brooklynite has given me the opportunity to ride the infamous L subway line (formerly called the LL in my day!) which makes a countless stops between my hometown of Canarsie, Brooklyn to 14th Street in Manhattan. When I commuted, it was such a long and tedious ride that eventually I had the name and order of every stop memorized. So, when Jelena told me to take the L train and get off at Morgan Avenue, it all came rushing back.

That was the 1980s and a lot has changed since then. This time, I got to the Morgan Avenue stop and took a short walk to Structural Color Gallery while passing many industrial buildings covered in street art. I was greeted by Matthew Andress and Jelena Petrovic at the door and they gave me a tour of the gallery and workspace area.

Seeing the installation in person made it a very special experience. The art was displayed in a very creative way by dimming the lights and lighting each piece with curatorial care. By traveling upstate to bring back some trees and branches, the gallerists used them as props to reimagine a forest, which complemented the artwork perfectly.

Stay tuned for Part 2 on Thursday, when I share more information about Structural Color Gallery and present video interviews with Jelena and Matthew that I recorded during my visit. The best way to be a part of the art scene is getting to know the people behind the scenes.
