We often hear about thriving, so let's start by understanding what it means. Thriving refers to progressing toward or realizing a goal despite or because of circumstances. The terms 'thrive' and 'flourish' are often used interchangeably and have similar meanings. Both words imply a state of growth, success, and prosperity in various areas of life. However, 'thrive' can also carry the connotation of overcoming challenges and adversity, while 'flourish' emphasizes a state of abundance and prosperity. This article focuses on thriving and explores the one habit most responsible for making it happen. Spencer Savings Bank has announced the appointment of Joseph Murphy as Vice President and Controller. He will lead the accounting team in financial reporting, accounting operations, budgeting, profitability management and monitoring. He also will oversee accounting controls in accordance with accounting and regulatory standards. Joseph has a decade of accounting and finance industry experience and has held past leadership positions for public and mutual banks as chief financial officer, chief operating officer and controller. He holds a bachelor's of science in business from Virginia Tech and will be the incoming President in 2024 for the Financial Managers Society (FMS) of NY/NJ.

  

The bank also has welcomed Jesse Oliver as Vice President, Small Business Relationship Manager. He assumes the role within the bank’s Small Business Finance division, which was launched this past year and is experiencing great success. The division implemented new small business lending products while ensuring the bank’s strong credit culture is maintained. He brings 20 years of banking industry experience to Spencer’s Small Business Finance division. Prior to joining Spencer, he held various leadership positions at large financial institutions in the tri-state area. 


Finally, Spencer announced Jorge Garcia has been named the Financial Center Manager of its new Edison location. He is responsible for leading and managing customer relationship development, local community engagement and the day-to-day operations of the center. Prior to joining Spencer, Jorge held the positions of business banker and relationship banker/branch manager at two regional banks. 

Berkeley College has named Randy Gómez (top left) as Director, Corporate and Community Relations, for its Corporate Learning Partnership program in New York. In this role, Gómez cultivates relationships with businesses, local governments, and nonprofits, facilitating higher education and training initiatives for their workforce. Gómez joined Berkeley College in 2005, rising to the position of Senior Director, Admissions. She holds a master of science degree in organizational leadership from Mercy University and a bachelor of business administration in business administration–marketing from Berkeley College.


In addition, The Woodbridge Metro Chamber of Commerce recently appointed Jennifer DeJesus for a two-year term as Chairperson of its executive board. DeJesus serves as Campus Operating Officer of Berkeley College in Woodbridge. DeJesus holds a master of arts degree in higher education from Caldwell University and a bachelor's of arts in communications from Seton Hall University.

Nisivoccia has announced a number of promotions, effective January 2024. David Bensen was named director of tax. He joined Nisivoccia in October 2019 with 14 years of prior tax experience and specializes in providing services to individual and business tax clients. David holds a master’s in taxation from Northeastern University. Brian Gibbons was named manager. He began his career at Nisivoccia in 2017, providing accounting, audit and single audit services to municipalities, counties, school districts and other various government entities.


Brian Ko, Vicki Kosuda and Caitlin Orton all were named principals. Brian began his career with Nisivoccia as an intern in 2010, servicing school district and municipal clients. Vicki joined Nisivoccia in October 2022 to lead and expand the Client Accounting Services (CAS) practice within the firm. Caitlin began her career as an intern with Nisivoccia in 2012 and has since developed a practice of servicing municipal and school district clients.


Michelle Shapiro was named director of tax. He joined Nisivoccia in 2020. She helps her clients through tax planning strategies and entity selection, working with business entities of various segments and high net-worth individuals. Michelle is the former President and currently a Director of the New Jersey Society of CPAs, Morris/Sussex Chapter, a member of the Morris County Chamber Executive Women in Business Group and sits on the finance committee of the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Harlene Stevens also was named director of tax. She will be celebrating 17 years with the firm in February and specializes in small business and high net-worth clients while leading the firm's dental accounting practice. Finally, Matt Sylvester was named supervising senior. He joined the firm in its governmental entity group in 2019 and provides audit and accounting services to municipalities, school districts and local authority organizations.





Einhorn, Barbarito, Frost & Botwinick, PC has announced that partner Matthew Rheingold has been named Co-Chair of the Taxation and Wills, Trusts & Estates practice groups, effective January 1, 2024. Matthew joined Einhorn Barbarito in 2015 as an associate focusing on tax, trusts and estates. He was named counsel in 2019 and partner in 2021. He earned his LL.M. in taxation from New York Law School, his J.D. from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsburg Law Center, and his bachelor's of science from Syracuse University.


The firm also announced that James Porfido has joined them as Of Counsel in the firm’s Criminal Practice Group. James is a Certified Criminal Trial Attorney by the New Jersey Supreme Court and joins Einhorn Barbarito after more than 35 years in practice. He earned his J.D. from the University of Bridgeport School of Law and his bachelor's of arts in political science from Seton Hall University.  

Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith & Davis LLP has announced the promotion of six attorneys to Partner and associate attorneys to Counsel.


New Partners

Jessica Carroll concentrates her practice in litigation, with an emphasis on representing healthcare providers at both the state and federal levels and within arbitration forums. Michael Coskey represents clients in a broad range of real estate transactions, litigation and land use matters, including the acquisition, disposition and leasing of commercial and multi-family residential properties, and the development and redevelopment of real estate. Conor Hennessey concentrates his practice in commercial litigation involving real estate transactions, real estate brokerage law, business disputes, commercial contract actions, consumer fraud act claims, professional malpractice cases and high stakes personal injury cases involving premises liability and medical malpractice.


David Scott’s environmental law practice emphasizes transactions, permitting and regulatory compliance. He provides counsel on environmental risks associated with real estate and business transactions and methods for mitigating those risks. Fay Szakal focuses her practice in corporate, real estate and healthcare transactions. Her work encompasses the drafting and negotiation of corporate agreements and contracts, including those related to mergers and acquisitions of business entities, corporate and company formation, real estate and redevelopment matters, health care and private equity deals, financing matters and other commercial transactions. Charles J. Vaccaro concentrates his practice in commercial litigation. His experience encompasses various areas of civil litigation at both the state and federal level, including contract and business disputes, construction matters, employment law, insurance coverage, consumer fraud, real estate and personal injury matters.


New Counsel

Lisa B. DiPasqua concentrates her practice in family law. Since joining the firm in 2004, she has dedicated her practice to complex matrimonial matters such as divorce, alimony, child custody and parenting time, child support, equitable distribution and post-judgment divorce matters. Lauren A. Perrella concentrates her practice on commercial real estate transactions. She represents clients in connection with the acquisition, disposition, leasing and financing of industrial, office, retail, multi-family and mixed-use properties.
