APRIL

Sacramento Legislative Visit

This month, the Board of Supervisors, CAO Jason Britt, and Chief of Staff Israel Sotelo met with legislators in Sacramento to advocate for Tulare County. Their conversations were focused on increased water allocations, additional road funding, services for victims of crimes, and CARE Court. Following the day of advocacy, they attended the California State Association of Counties Legislative Conference to discuss policy, meet with committees, and help bring more resources to Tulare County.

Pet of the Month

Our Pet of the Month is Millie Bobby Brown, ID # A237140. She's a 1-year-old Rottweiler-Chow mix and came into the shelter as a stray on April 11. She's been on Adventure Paws and had fun riding in a car. She loves compliments, meeting new people, walks well on a leash, and gets along great with other dogs. She's a very sweet, friendly girl and eats treats from your hand.

Her adoption fee is only $20! This includes a microchip, vaccinations, deworming, and spay.

District 1: Supervisor Larry Micari

As a retired public safety officer, keeping communities safe and caring for victims of crimes is part of who I am. Since the passage of Prop 47, California has seen increases in retail and cargo theft, drug addiction reaching crisis levels, and homelessness increasing throughout California. Which means we are seeing more victims of crime and communities are feeling more dangerous.

While in Sacramento this month, we advocated for appropriate funding for the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) so they receive the help they deserve and an adjustment to the CARE Court process in an effort to help increase treatment success rates for those dealing with drug addiction and in need of mental health care.

I will continue to support efforts to improve the criminal justice system, keep the well-being of our residents as a top priority, and emphasize the importance of programs that have been proven to work to reduce crime and keep everyone safe.

Earth Day was this month and community cleanups have been taking place throughout District 2. Tulare County offers services to help you clean up at home and in your neighborhood:

  • Landfills – There are two Landfills in Tulare County: Visalia & Woodville. Learn more about what they accept, when they are open, and more HERE.
  • Transfer Stations – Not everyone can easily make it to our two landfills. We have transfer stations in communities to help collect trash without requiring a long drive. Find them HERE.
  • Recycling – Deciding which can recyclable items belong in is tough, but the Solid Waste department has programs for oil, sharps, household hazardous waste, organics, and more! Find them all HERE.
  • Illegal Dumping – with all the services offered to handle your trash, there is no reason for illegal dumping. If you see illegal dumping happening, please report it! You can report it on our Illegal Dumping Reporting Tool.

The Tulare County Museum Jamboree is this Saturday at Mooney Grove Park! I’ll be attending and can’t wait to see the blacksmith at work and the live woodworking demo. The event starts at 10:00 a.m. and will include food trucks, hayrides, live performances, a car show, and lots to learn from the Tule River Language Project and the Tulare County Museum. The event is free and it’s $6 per car to enter the park – it’s only $3 per car for seniors.

You can also see park progress and additions: the inclusive playground, the dog park, and the pond.

Tulare County Parks are seeing lots of changes and improvements. You can learn more about new projects from me and Parks Manager Albert Cendejas on the radio this Sunday. We sat down with My 97.5 FM to share all the updates. Tune in at 10:00 a.m. this Sunday on any Momentum Broadcasting channel: KJUG Country 106.7, Hitz 104.9, 99.7 KIOO Classic Rock, or My 97.5 FM.

In District Four, it's been a busy and productive time! From engaging in crucial conversations regarding the East Orosi Wastewater project with the State Water Board, to representing our community's interests at the annual CSAC Legislative Conference in Sacramento, I've been fully committed to advocating for our constituents. As Vice Chair of the CSAC Administration of Justice committee, we discussed pressing issues like retail theft. Attending a meeting with Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara shed light on crucial topics such as fire insurance, market trends, and Firewise initiatives amidst challenging times. Spending time with Supervisors from throughout Calfiornia during these conferences helps us understand regional concerns together. Moreover, participating in community events like the 5K Girls on the Run in Cutler-Orosi, Dinuba Chamber ribbon cutting for NeedleNay’s Tattoo Shop, and the Woodlake Castle Rock Carnival have been rewarding and enjoyable. I look forward to continuing to serve and represent District Four with dedication and passion.

With all the items swirling around it is difficult to single out one issue to highlight but water still tops my list. Last year we had water, but it came all at once. That shifted our conversation to emergency response, temporary repairs, and planning efforts. Now the availability and storage of water is back at the fore. Our County is the largest agricultural producer in the world and is number one in exports. To feed the world, we need a reliable water supply. With the implementation of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), pumping is being severely curtailed. Our lobbying efforts include the need for reliable releases of water south of the Delta for farming, dairy and ranching operations which are the centerpiece of our economy. We will continue to fight at every level for reliable water sources, conveyance, and storage!
