An Evening of Art and Jazz

The City of Rochester's Black Heritage Committee invites you to join them on Thursday, February 1st at 5:30 PM at Rochester City Hall for a kickoff celebration of Black History Month with An Evening of Art & Jazz and Food Tasting. This event will feature art pieces from local artists; food samples provided courtesy of the Sisters Together Achieving Results organization (S.T.A.R., Inc.), and musical performances by the students from the ROCmusic Program.

Black Film Festival
Kicks off February 1st

Central Library
The Reynolds Media Center at the Central Library celebrates Black Heritage Month by presenting the second annual Black Film Festival, showcasing groundbreaking gems of Black cinema from across the decades, some rarely seen. The festival owes its genesis to Maya Cade’s database, Black Film Archive (blackfilmarchive.com) Rachel DeGuzman, Director of Engagement, Community Partnerships & Public Curation of GEVA Theatre, will open the Festival on Thursday, February 1 at 4:00pm. The opening film will be "Harry and Lena" from 1970. Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne put their musical chops, intimate bond, and star power to use in this musical variety special, highlighting their gifts for storytelling, music, and connecting with an audience.

University of Rochester Winterfest 24 Presents: Rachel Sennott and Ziwe. Rachel Sennott is a prolific actor, writer and stand up comedian who has been profiled by Elle, Nylon, W Magazine among many others. Rachel earned a Breakthrough Performer nomination at the Gotham Independent Film Awards for her work in the critically acclaimed indie feature SHIVA BABY; her performance was praised by The New York Times as “a revelation”. Ziwe is a talented comedian, writer, and actress, who has taken the Internet by storm and captured audiences nationwide with her signature candor, wit, and salient commentary on race and politics in America. She has been named to Forbes 30 Under 30 2021 and received critical acclaim by The New York Times, TIME, and Variety among others.

The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House welcomes all to this special event, which supports their mission and programs. In the same way that Susan B. Anthony hosted her birthday celebrations during her lifetime, this will be an opportunity to encourage one another in the pursuit of equality and give in support of the mission. The evening will feature a keynote presentation from Candacy Taylor, an award-winning author, photographer, and cultural documentarian. Her most recent book, Overground Railroad, documents the history of the Green Book and its role in the lives of 20th century people of color in the United States.
