Friends,

Winter Carnival kicks off Thursday evening in Rice Park and this week I'm thrilled to share the newsletter with our Carnival partners. There are so many events in downtown this year. Keep reading for your guide to all the fun coming up during the coolest celebration on Earth! - Joe

"So be it!" shouted Boreas, "There will be a Carnival in old Saint Paul!"

Back in the fall of 1885, newspaper reporters from the East Coast visited Saint Paul and declared it was like “another Siberia, unfit for human habitation.”

Did Saint Paulites take that lightly? No, they retaliated and created the beloved wintertime festival that now boasts the claim of oldest winter festival in the country.

Since 1886, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival has provided family-friendly events and community pride to Saint Paul and the Twin Cities metro area.

This year marks the 138th celebration of the “Coolest Celebration on Earth™.” More than 50 family-friendly, interactive, free or low-cost community events will be held all over Saint Paul beginning Thursday, January 25, through Sunday, February 4.

From our signature ice carving competitions, snow sculptures at the Vulcan Snow Park, the Grande Day Parade and Torchlight Parade, to newer events such as Rondo Night, Kids and Family Day and Winter Carnival’s Day of Good, this year’s schedule of events has something for everyone. And don’t miss the live music, food and beverages, and all sorts of fun in the new big and cozy Entertainment Chalet in Rice Park.

The Saint Paul Winter Carnival has expanded each year to provide new programming that reflects the city’s changing demographics and welcomes people of all cultures to celebrate winter with us. Join us as we showcase free entertainment activities from diverse cultures: music and dance by local artists, hands-on children’s activities, and food and merchandise booths.

The Saint Paul Winter Carnival is produced by the Saint Paul Festival & Heritage Foundation and is funded by donations and corporate contributions. The Board of Directors, supported by hundreds of corporate and individual members, employs a small staff to help plan this festival. We welcome you to become a member of the Saint Paul Festival & Heritage Foundation and help support the growth and success of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival for years to come. Please visit wintercarnival.com for details.

Looking forward to seeing you at the 138th Saint Paul Winter Carnival!

Here's your day-by-day guide to the 2024 Saint Paul Winter Carnival

Snow may be lacking, but the frigid weather can only mean one thing — King Boreas has returned for this year’s Saint Paul Winter Carnival.

And while the legendary ice king and Queen Aurora duel with fiery Vulcans during the 10-day festival, we get to enjoy live entertainment, ice and snow carvings, and plenty of other community events.

This year’s Winter Carnival calendar retains many of the beloved traditions and new additions from last year’s celebration, from King Boreas and Vulcanus Rex’s parades to Rondo Night and a partnership with Children’s Hospital that brings kids’ drawings to life as ice sculptures.

The main change this year is to the warming tent situation: Rather than the constellation of warming huts and chilly stages of years past, the Winter Carnival is building Hamernick’s Entertainment Chalet at Rice Park, a massive heated tent that’ll be the carnival’s unofficial outdoor-ish HQ.

Meet Queen Adonika and King Big Mac, top dogs of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival and Doggie Depot

The votes have been tabulated and Saint Paul has two new top dogs: Meet Queen Adonika and King Big Mac, the newly named canine royalty of the 2024 Saint Paul Winter Carnival and Doggie Depot, an upcoming dog-friendly event at Union Depot.

Adonika, a 2-year-old Pomsky (half Pomeranian, half Siberian Husky) from Minnetonka, received 515 votes among the 79 queen nominees in an online competition that ended on Sunday. Big Mac, a 2-year-old French Bulldog from Minneapolis, fetched 287 votes among the 140 king nominees.

The dogs will walk in the King Boreas Grande Day Parade on Saturday and will be crowned at Doggie Depot, a dog-friendly event at Union Depot on Saturday, Feb. 3.
