Cathy Moklebust
September 17-18
The sophisticated and
vibrant city of Juneau, Alaska, is the only state capit ol in
the nation not accessible by road. It is exceptionally picturesque
with steep, narrow roads clawing up into the rain-forested
mountains. Visitors will see glaciers, mountains, eagles and lush
green.
Resurrection Lutheran
Church and Chapel by the Lake are hosting a handbell workshop at
Resurrection in downtown Juneau September 17-18. Cathy Moklebust is
the clinician and three of her pieces will be exhibited.

New
direction for our organization
Some new and exciting
changes are on the horizon for our organization and the art of
handbell ringing.
At lunch on Day Two of Pinnacle 2010 in Music City, Nashville,
Tennessee, AGEHR president John Pfeiffer announced the beginnings
of some major changes which will serve to transform the face of the
organization and become the catalyst for handbell musicians to
build a lifetime of ringing.
In his keynote address at seminar last year, John indicated
the need for the organization to move in a bold, new direction if
it is to survive. Since then the board has been working on a plan
to achieve that move. He said that the Guild will invest a good
deal of time and money into the future of the organization by
concentrating on three areas.
First will be a complete overhaul of technology, which will
bring handbell musicians and directors together like never before,
truly recognizing ourselves as the voice of the art.
Second will be a restructuring of the organization's
membership and the introduction of faith based, educational, and
community emphases from which members can choose to get the content
necessary to fill their needs.
Third is a major rebranding effort designed to go along with
the direction our organization and art form need to take in order
to take its rightful place in the music world. The new look for the
organization has been revealed. AGEHR will be the Handbell
Musicians of Am erica.
A big part of the new direction being undertaken by the Guild
is to recognize ourselves as musicians to be taken seriously by the
music world at large. The fabulous concerts at this year's Pinnacle
have proven that we hold a solid place as musicians to be
respected. And the name of the organization will reflect that
attitude.
You may read more about it at the new website designed to keep
everyone informed about the changes, www.handbellmusicians.org, and
also see how you can help financially with the changes.

It's a great time to
chime!
An Update from Ethos Music
Center's Handchime Teacher
I didn't even know what a handchime was when I opened the
email from Ethos Music Center entitled "Great Opportunity for an
Ethos Teacher." It didn't take me long, though, to catch on to the
idea that the Chime Loan Program is truly a great way to make and
teach music in a community setting. I was lucky enough to ring hand
bells in elementary school, and armed with this lovely memory, a
background in education that includes three years as a piano
teacher at Ethos (a nonprofit community music center), and a firm
belief that handchimes are a simple way to introduce basic music
skills to a group who will be happily rewarded with the ability to
make sweet music together, I inquired as to whether another teacher
had already snapped up this wonderful opportunity.
Thus began my mentorship with Ellie Hodder, the amazing Hand
bell Director at the First Unitarian Church here in Portland,
Oregon. Her insight and connections allowed me to attend a
conference and receive additional training from Diane Collins and
Christine Weber-Kearney. All of these women are enthusiastic,
talented teachers, with a wealth of accumulated knowledge and a
love of sharing music.
With their help and guidance, we began the first Ethos hand
chime ensemble, which performed at Ethos' 10th Anniversary event
with the intergenerational women's choir and more recently at
Ethos' student recitals. This spring, three very focused and
dedicated chimers helped arrange Coldplay's Viva la Vida for
chimes, after being inspired by the YouTube video of a children's
choir that sings this song. You can see the chimers' performance at
http://blip.tv/file/3369066.
We are currently raising funds to purchase a set of chimes so
that we can maintain our program at Ethos. The students themselves
are extremely motivated to help raise this money!
I can't stress enough that this is a wonderful way to bring
kids together and give them a chance to express themselves through
music. We are all very grateful to AGEHR Area 10 for the hand chime
loan. For anyone considering taking this on for next year, I say,
"Do it!"

Reflection of Conference Final
Concert
A week ago I was so fortunate to attend a
concert of bells with Don and his sisters. I anticipated a ho-hum
night of music, only to experience an exhilarating concert sending
chills up my spine. There were over 300 bells playing a composition
[in unison] of "Celebration," composed and directed by a young
Parisian man positioned high above this huge "orchestra" of bells
on a tower of scaffolding resembling the lower portion of the
Eiffel Tower. The fact that they had all come together with their
combined skills ...and their TONS of brass bells in one location
was an electrifying experience. All ages, all skill levels, and
many unique personality styles of playing made this a phenomenon to
behold. Unforgettable. Music truly has the power to transform and
energize!
-Naida
(Sent to Shosh Meyer, Membership
Chair, by Roald Young, Director of Cape Blanco Ringers Handbell
Choir, Port Orford, Oregon. It was forwarded to him from a
friend.)

Thank you for
scholarships
 Dear AGEHR Area 10,
Thank you!
Thank you so much for the scholarships! We wouldn't have been
able to go without them. We both enjoyed the conductor; Fred
Gramann , he was the most awesome person in the world. The solo
ringers were amazing and inspiring. We hope to go to more
conferences in the future. We hope we see you there!
Thank you,
Karina & Karissa Dautenhahn
Dear Area 10,
I wanted to thank you for the scholarships for my daughters,
Karina (15) and Karissa (10) to the Area 10 Conference in Newberg,
Oregon. The girls really enjoyed the experience and we met many new
and very nice musicians and teachers. They especially enjoyed the
conductor, Fred Gramann and the evening concerts by Velocity (They
both said it was "awesome!").
The weekend was a very positive experience and they gained so
much confidence in their abilities. They are looking forward to
taking more advanced bell ringing classes in the future. The
scholarships were very much appreciated especially in today's
economy. Thank you so much for making this possible for us.
Sincerely,
Anna Dautenhahn
