Could my golf swing be causing my back pain?

MM
Dr. Melissa McCue

Head-to-foot compression, lateral side-bending, and a "front-to-back" shearing motion all stress the spine and cause back pain. Couple this with poor biomechanics during golf swings, one is likely to experience low pain. A force equal to eight times a golfer's body weight, is placed on the spine during a normal golf swing. Because of severe rotation and side-bending that occur during a golf swing, it is typical that the right side of the body is typically affected. Poor flexibility and muscle strength can also lead to mild muscle strains in the back and lower extremities, which can ultimately lead to more serious injuries. Physical Therapy can help increase muscle strength and flexibility therefore decreasing the risk of injury during golf season.
