Hello Juana,
This is the last month of Fiscal Year 2024 at Clark County and we are busy making preparations for the new fiscal year. We are committed to helping experienced and aspiring vendors connect with resources and opportunities to grow their businesses in FY25. I encourage you to save the dates for two annual events that are important for any small business seeking to succeed as a government or corporate contractor: BDAC's Alumni & Friends Mixer, and the Committed to Our Business Community (CTOBC) business resource event in which RBDAC partners. You'll find the dates in our "Business-Building Events" section below.
Also in this edition of the Small Biz Update, if your business has only been bidding for contracts in large municipalities, you may be overlooking other opportunities. You'll find some pointers that may help you discover new prospects.
The County will observe Juneteenth on Wednesday, June 19th. If you're looking for ways to celebrate with your family, you're invited to join in the "Juneteenth in the 106" celebration on Saturday, June 15th. Read on for the details.
To your success,
Shani J. Coleman

Are You Overlooking Contract Opportunities? | |
|
While large infrastructure projects tend to get a lot of attention, Southern Nevada offers many less visible contract opportunities that are less visible but valuable and within reach of small businesses. Some may have less competition and give small vendors and suppliers the chance to shine. While seeking such opportunities, here are some entities to explore, a few examples of what each buys, and how to find out what they are looking for.
-
Just as larger entities need products and services, so do smaller entities. Each city has its own process, so check the solicitations of places like Boulder City, Mesquite, and North Las Vegas for solicitations to provide anything from janitorial work and landscaping to IT support and consulting.
-
The Clark County School District (CCSD) is the fifth largest in the country. In addition to school supplies, the District needs vendors for food services, transportation, construction, technology, and more.
-
Special entities like the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) and the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) have unique needs. They often seek contractors for engineering, construction, specialized equipment, and professional services.
-
Nevada State agencies such as the Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) buy everything from construction to IT services, office supplies, and vehicle maintenance.
-
Federal contracts are not just for big firms. Agencies like Nellis Air Force Base, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the National Park Service need a wide range of goods and services, including construction, maintenance, IT support, and professional services.
-
Don’t forget about subcontracting with larger prime contractors. Many government contracts require prime contractors to give a percentage of work to small businesses or those owned by minorities, women, veterans, and other small and disadvantaged businesses. Networking with prime contractors can open doors to subcontracting opportunities, and help you build capacity to compete on a larger scale.
How to Find These Opportunities
You can find and monitor contract opportunities for about 30 government entities all in one place by signing up on NGEM (Nevada Gov eMarketplace) and checking the site regularly. In addition, you can receive notification of solicitations that call for the types of goods or services you provide. Here’s how to get started with NGEM and other online procurement sites to learn about opportunities as they arise.
NGEM is a supplier database where you can register your business to receive bid opportunities from 16 different entities, including Clark County, the City of Las Vegas, the Water Reclamation District, Harry Reid International Airport, and more. You can register online at NgemNV.com.
- Opportunities in Nevada & Beyond - Sign Up for Bonfire
Bonfire is designed to help small suppliers search bid opportunities throughout the U.S. by project type free of charge. Subscription options are available for those seeking more robust search features. Local small businesses can register to search and receive notifications of available opportunities through Clark County’s Bonfire Portal.
- Federal Contract Opportunities - SAM
To do business with the Federal Government a business must have an active registration in the System for Award Management (SAM), an official website of the U.S. government. There is no cost to use SAM. You can sign up at SAM.Gov.
Connect Directly With Decision-Makers
Many purchasing or procurement departments including Clark County’s, can provide a full list of their key Purchasing agents and the types of goods and services each is responsible for buying. Agents are often open to meeting in person with potential suppliers when time allows. When you have the good fortune to meet face-to-face, be sure to ask good questions and make listening a priority. Find out who the end users of your products and services are. Reach out to end users and, when possible, schedule a meeting to learn more about their user/department needs, buying cycles and processes, and the best way to keep in touch. That information can help you determine the next steps in your efforts to win business.
Take Advantage of Available Business Resources
Attend industry events, chamber of commerce meetings, and procurement workshops to build your network and connect with potential customers. You can also meet government buyers and prime contractors.
For help and advice, use resources such as SBOP, the Nevada Apex Accelerator, the Nevada Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the Small Business Administration (SBA), and the Nevada Women’s Business Center.
